What would you pay?

Let me set the scene... 61 Caravel painted exterior now peeling, broken windows, original axles. I already own a road worthy renovated AS so this will be a long term project. I am not afraid to do work. I do want to get a great deal since it will need a lot of work. I have consulted the Vintage Airstream web site and am curious if it is up to date with today's economy? Plus this AS needs major love. Any advice would be great. Thanks so much for your time.

$1500.00 would be reasonable.

I would imagine the inside is in rough condition. With broken windows (water damage and replacement issues) I would only pay $500-800. If you are willing to pay the $1500, find a better example. ie all Original windows and not painted.

The one bright side would be that the skin was proctected under the paint. however, I bet they painted it so the could fill the dents with bondo.

Good Luck

...or they sanded it before painting.

I think in the $1000-1500 range is reasonable, only because so few of this model were made. It really is a unique layout...would definately be a conversation piece if it were brought back to life in it's orginal layout. I've never seen this layout in person...but I like the "oddball" layouts...cool!

If you are planning on a gut-and-redo, there are probably better candidates with less "unknowns".

Thank you Andy, Nick and Shari.

Shawn and I are heading over there to talk to the owner tomorrow to see what we can do to purchase the AS. We are hoping to rescue and save this baby from it's current situation.

I am pretty excited hopefully one day it can be nice like Birdy. You set the bar pretty darn hight tho!

Wish us luck. I will keep everyone posted.

We like the uniqueness of the floor plan a well. We actually have been looking for the last two years for a smaller Airstream. I love the 50's Safari or Flying Clouds . Shawn love the Bambi and Caravel's. We in fact almost bought a 55 Bubble last summer but we couldn't come to an agreement with the seller on price so hopefully this will be our Little AS soon.

I'm contemplating buying a 1970 international for $550 plus replacing all four tires to get it off the property and back to my house. All windows are broken, no door and animals may made it there home. Sad. Worth it? I hope so. Frame will be rusted, interior destroyed. All ready to gut and start fresh.
