As a resident of Silicon Valley as well, I recommend watching craigslist vigilantly!!! Have cash in hand ready to go on a moments notice. That's how I picked up my Globetrotter. By the time I got there and was looking at it, one other buyer showed up and the seller had received numerous calls. But I was first to see it, had cash in hand and towed it home that day. Also, try watching all local sale rags; penny saver, metro, local classifieds, etc. I firmly believe that these sorts of classifieds will give you the greatest success for a sub $1000 trailer. Happy hunting!

BTW, the guy who sold Viking his Safari is ONE COOL DUDE!!!!!

Here's one from the Recycler in southern California. He's asking $2300, but it sounds like he's somewhat flexible.
Travel Trailers and 5th Wheels|1957 Airstream 20ft aluminmm - $2,300.00 on Recycler

Here's another up in Chico for $1200.

An $950 Argosy up in Oregon

Happy hunting

Oh dear,

Don't let my hubby see these... he will want to buy another trailer! All look interesting! The '57 has all the interior parts, or most of them, cool.

I was thinking the same thing.

We live in Chicago, and are talking about driving out to San Francisco in June for a conference. Depending on where in Wisconsin the trailer is... where you are in the Bay area... and other factors (our new SUV which doesn't have a hitch on it yet, for example) it's possible that we could scratch each other's back, so to speak. Your trailer for our gas money!

Lemmie know if you'd be interested enough for me to look into it further.

Brad—An interesting proposition! The trailer is located in Warrens, Wisconsin; 250 miles from Chicago. I'm about 60 miles south of SF, along the 280 interstate in San Jose. I wonder what type of MPG you could expect from your SUV when towing the Airstream? If you were able to get 15 mpg, I calculate that for the distance (2,130 miles; Chicago to Warrens, Warrens to San Jose, CA), it would cost about $360 at current gas prices. That would be a pretty good deal considering the price I've been quoted by professional haulers (over 5 times that amount)! That's of course assuming gas prices don't spike between now and June. But this is definitely worth considering.

Toddster—thanks for the links...I really like that '57!

Hodag—The Flying Cloud is indeed still for sale; but may not be if I find someone to tow it back! Let me know if you'd like to take a look at it.

I sure wish I could get 15mpg while towing. The best I've ever seen is 14, but usually I'm closer to 12 or 13.

jhealey, I'm not far from you (over by the Pruneyard in Campbell). We should grab Viking hook up sometime for a beer or two.

Here is another idea. If you can't buy a low priced trailer why not look at overpriced trailers?

Don't call me crazy till you hear me out. If you see an Airstream advertised that is definitely overprice, save the ad for 2 or 3 weeks and call again. There is just a chance they have not sold it and will take a deep discount.

On the other hand, if you see lots of overpriced trailers and they all sell for way too much money that tells you something too.

do you have any pics of the unit?

I'm about 3 hours away from it, so a visit would work also.
did you get my pm's and e-mails?

Toddster, Viking: I'm up for that too. I'm less than 15 minutes away from the Pruneyard! Where, when?

Ganaraska: Interesting idea. You're probably right—a lot of the overpriced trailers probably don't sell very easily, and hence the sellers might be willing to take less than they're asking. I'm going to test your theory.

Hodag: My apologies if I missed your email. I got inundated with PM's and emails when I first listed it. I was planning to get back to everyone eventually, or at least once I got the photos of the trailer. This weekend, someone is going out there (if they can get in touch with the guy whose lot it is on...which has been the hold-up thus far) to look at the trailer, and snap a couple of photos for me. Bug me again in a couple of days, and I'll get back to you with the photos.

i was going to suggest a relay of AS owners/towers who might be able to get the trailer to the man-it'd be a fun way to meet other AS'rs and a chance to do a day trip for a good cause. but there is a better offer of a one way gas/trlr trade...pretty okay. You folks rock.
