It's amazing what some are asking for gutted units ..

check this one out, $15,000 !! what would this cost to rebuild ? How many hours invested or cost should you have a skilled contractor do the job ?!!

Way too much $$$$$$.
You will spend at least twice that on bringing it back to usable condition.

That does seem like a lot. In Canada Airstreams are a bit rarer then in the US.
One that is gutted and or should be gutted is easily worth 5-10k just for a shell that is in good shape. 10k US = 7k Canadian-+.

hey Monza. You have your numbers backwards. US dollar is worth more than Can. right now.

IMHO what they're offering is worth closer to $1,500 than $15,000. It's a medium-to-long '70s trailer before gray tanks were the norm, you rely on the seller's diligence on labeling and organizing the interior parts that are probably in a pile somewhere, and he's been keeping it under that shed in a very dry-looking place and promises it has no leaks.

Unless it's a very special trailer (rare or particularly desirable size/floorplan, etc) for $15,000 I'd expect a '70s trailer to be ready to camp in or 50%+ restored needing to be finished. This trailer is 5% restored, they've just done the demo and you don't know how well that was done.

It's every day business - sellers ask what they think something is worth (or what someone may pay for an item) and buyers / market makers then decide if it is worth that or not. Some sellers use the "start high and be willing to drop a price" and others believe the price is right and will stick with it. In the end - something is worth exactly what someone else will actually pay for it ...

If you read the seller's ad though, it looks like he's done a lot of the "hard work" on the unit, doesn't it?

Not really. He's taken out the interior furnishings and interior skins. While that's time-consuming, it's much less "hard work" than putting together all the systems (plumbing, 120V electrical, 12V electrical and propane) and building a nice interior, putting new axles/bearings/brakes, finding and sealing all the leaks and potential leaks the seller knows nothing about because he has the trailer parked under a shed in an arid place, etc. Demo seems like a huge task at the time, but it's a small fraction of the work involved, and demands a miniscule fraction of the skill required to actually complete the project.

It's just MONEY, if you have it, you spend it, before your kids or the government gets it.

I see people think that a rebuild is a easy thing to do.

Then after poring lots of time and money into it, someone else take it on. Someone down the line will get a good deal or start all over.

Absolutely no doubt that it needs axles. It's much closer to $1500.00 in value than $15,000.00. From the looks of it, and according to the post, there really wasn't a good reason to completely gut it.

The "hard work is already done" is a bunch of bologna. You can find many many many rigs in this condition or something very similar. You'll spend as much time in just "research" for the rebuild as they put in for the demo.

It took me one week to demo/gut my '1967 Caravel (17'). I took me 14 months to put it all back together...albeit with a few "improvements"

I looked back at my notes;
45.5 hrs to remove the interior, skins, lift off the shell, remove the belly pan and cut/epoxy new floor boards. 21X that time to reassemble.

FWIW, I sold our '74, ready to camp, for $6k--with two LCD televisions and a Hensley Arrow.
