Like not government money. But being as Haas has contributed part of that money (if I remember correctly) I am guessing that part of the importance in this IS to study the declining bee population. This is a critical issue. And a company like Haas has a vested interest in seeing Bees continue to thrive.

I am 110% pro-bees. Even though personally, I am allergic to them ~ without them we would be in a heap of hurt!

I agree - I am feeling both sides of the emotion spectrum because I love the idea of the project Rob is putting together. What an excellent educational piece. Just why did it have to be THAT trailer. I keep having that picture of all of the places the trailer had been on the door.... Bummer

Hmmm... If (IF) I had the money, I'd offer a trade of my gutted 63 TW for this one...

There are any number of vintage Airstreams he could use for his project. Why gut a historical one? That's sad.

This guy sounds very interesting--and he's doing valuable research and education--but his destruction of this irreplaceable piece of history just doesn't make sense. I don't think he realizes what he's doing. What about trying to reach him through the St. Helena Montessori school he's working with...

Everyone let's take a step back for a moment. Please do not send any more derogitory emails to Mr. Keller. I have received a long email from him and need to runravel the situation (tomorrow).

This appears to be a case of a project getting out of hand. As they started into restoring the trailer the floor rot and other damage began to mount beyond what the grant funds would allow to be repaired. They were not prepared for the extensive floor replacement and other fixes that this trailer requires.

As panic set in, there was an urgent need to "dispose" of the interior contents that were clogging up the yard due to "complaints" - thus the quick ad on Craigslist. As it sits the interior is out but still all there - carefully removed, but much of it in need of restoration or rebuilding itself as it too was falling apart when it was removed.

Mr. Keller is open to offers to sell or exchange this trailer for another Airstream that does not have the history. He is looking to get most of what he has invested in it out of it. I am not certain what price that will entail at this point, but we need to see if there is real interest in saving the trailer. Had it not been moved from Ohio to California, I might be interested, but at this time California is too far away for me. This will not be a project for the faint of heart. If there are any serious takers, please speak up.

Thank you.

And then there were 3

5289, 8671, and I have 6472. I wonder how many more are still around waiting to be found?

I agree with and support the above sentiments exactly. We need to keep track of these legacy trailers and keep in touch. Maybe the VAC would be the appropriate body? I don't know if I can touch honey ever again.

Incidentally the ebay # at the beginning of the thread is old and no longer works.

It is good to hear that he is open to offers or trades that will save this legendary trailer. For those of you who spoke up about wanting to rescue this trailer, now's your chance. Take him up on his offer before he changes his mind.

In preparation for my trip to the Bozeman rally I was out polishing. A pickup truck pulled into my driveway and an enthusiastic Rob hopped out. He was thrilled to find me outside since he wanted to ask me a zillion questions about Airstreams and towing. He was about to embark on his journey to fetch this trailer. I'm surprised that he had as few problems as he did since he had 6 people in his Honda Pilot tow vehicle. I was dubious as to how suitable it was, and told him, "whatever you do, get an equalizing hitch of some sort."

He did say that the history of the trailer had him rethinking his plan. Maybe he would resell the historical trailer and find one that was more of a shell. He seemed genuinely concerned about preserving the history.

I am merging threads. The story continues here if you want to be part of the rescue of 8671 and buy it, offer a gutted trailer in exchange, or temporary indoor storage (see posts starting at #43):

Alas and alack. I don't see I am going to have the time to do 6472 from the 63-64 ATW Caravan justice. She is looking for a new adoptive family. I have a classified listed with the forums. PM if you know anyone who can give this gallant old lady what she deserves.

Good luck with the sale, let us know how it goes. Understand the time and $$ needed, we're just getting started and felt the project slow down several times, start back up, now down and out a few weeks for job stuff, that's a really cool setup, hope you find someone that can bring her back.
