Help with purchase 2006 25' Safari

Looking for our first Airstream. Found a 2006 25' FB Safari LS SE in excellent condition. Has queen bed. Includes anti-sway bars. PO is asking $36,900 or best offer. Does this seem like a fair price?

Thanks for your time.

Greetings from the Florida Panhandle

First off, welcome to the Forums. We're glad to have you with us.

As to your question, we have a 2005 Safari 25FB LS SE, named Lucy. We bought Lucy new in June of 2006, and got a pretty good deal because she was a left over '05. Lucy's MSRP (sticker) was $48,517.00. We paid $37,890.00 for her.

Accordingly, the asking price of $36,900 for the 2006 that you are looking at seem quite high. Even if the hitch system that it comes with is a Hensley ($3,000 new), it's still pretty high.

Brian

I've got the exact same trailer and have had mine for two years. I picked mine up off of Craigs List and paid a couple of K more. I continue to look at these trailers out of curiosity if nothing else and I think this price is right in the ball park. Of course some others might argue.

My rule of thumb is, any price is a good price if you feel comfortable making the deal. Good luck. We love ours. And, this floor plan is very popular so finding one in your price range that is also in very good shape might be harder than you think.

What a difference a year(or two) makes. I just read Moosetags post and I had a similar experience dealing on a new one. There was an '07 on the lot that had been there for over a year. List price was in the high $50K range. I had him talked down into the lower $40s but couldn't pull the trigger for a number of reasons. By the time we were ready, a couple of years had passed and new ones were now in the $60K range.

After looking for more than a year we got our trailer. Sometime in '07 I believe they changed the sink configuration to the single deep round sink. I prefer the double sinks still and that is what we have.

Hi, if it is a real nice trailer, the price may be OK. Considering what my trailer listed for and how much we actually paid for it makes this trailer seem high, but compared to what a new 25' trailer lists for, this is quite a bit cheaper. A new 25' Airstream lists for about double the price of the list price on my 2005 model.

First, welcome. You will find this forum an invaluable source of information as I have. Trailers depreciate quite a bit the first few years. I paid 29,000 about a year ago for my 05' 28' Safari including an Equilizer hitch. It was in excellent condition and was stored in a heated garage when not being used. I suggest you look at prices on this forum's classified and elsewhere to get a reasonable estimate of values. Good luck.

Anything paid above resale price is known as opportunity cost. Some people call this "blue sky", but not me. If I keep something long enough, price doesn't matter as much as if I were a dealer planning to flip it. A friend once told me a good deal is when both buyer and seller are smiling.

Eastern South Dakota is very pretty with hills, rivers, and trees.

As a matter of comparison, we paid $38,000 for our 28' 2006 Safari LS SE which included the hitch, two Honda 2000w generators with parallel kit and an auxiliary gray water tank (new) in January. We spent another $1700 replacing the skylight and AC and buying new batteries.

I think that this one is a good deal but it is not an FB. I have found that the FB models in the 25 and 27 configurations usually run about $10K more that the other options. If this is actually true, then the price falls into the range of the one the OP was talking about.

We decided early on that the FB was the floor plan for us. We focused on these and then started looking. I think if you don't really care about what your floorplan is going to be then you probably need to keep looking. Follow Craigs List and the Airstream Classifieds to get a good grasp of the market values of the various trailers.

from the #s quoted in this thread it doesnt look like airstreams depreciate that quickly.probably a combo of the high cost of a new unit and the limited supply on the used market?what is driving the price hikes on the new units??

I like the idea of buying a used Airstream but from an Airstream dealer. To close the deal, dealers will do lots of required maintenance and are likely to give you a limited warranty. Having established a good relationship with a dealer is very helpful down the road, too. I'd just be more comfortable buying from a good dealer, knowing that he's making a profit but that he's buying into the deal, too.

I'd ask if it has new tires, batteries etc. It still sounds high but do a search on the classifieds here (one was @ $25,000) for the SE model but they also made changes to the interior. There are also a couple of 25' CCDs on there @ the same price your looking at and the CCDs cost more than the Safaris. Also look at rvtrader to look at prices. I know the NADA is not a great way to price an AS but I used it to negotiate the price on our 06 19' Bambi CCD last year. He started at $32,500 and I got it for $27,500 and he threw in 2 new batteries, all the cords, hoses, Reese Sway control, P3 brake controller and even all the dishes and flatware! Be ready to haggle and walk away. Also don't be afraid of buying across the country (bought mine in Williamsburg VA and live in KS) we have lots of inspectors to help you out. Good luck and remember time is your friend.
