Caravels, why do they sell for so much more?

OK I'm new to the whole Airstream thing...I've been watching prices on some trailers for sale on Ebay and the older Caravels sell for 1 1/2 times to 2 times as much as a older Safari or Soveriegn or take your pick....Why is that? are they more rare?

Thanks in advance...

Nathan

It's the size

Yup - the size. Caravels, bambi's - the smaller, the higher the price will be. The larger, not so much.

Yep, easy to tow fun to use and they are so dog gone cute too...Rare could be part of it too. Supply and demand thing.. We all know how that goes!!! You do see more Safari's then Bambi's and Caravel's for sale. Most are spoken for way before they hit the market

Maybe the Bambis & Caravels were manufactured for fewer years?

I remember someone telling me that fewer than 200 of the Bambis are left on the road, but that could be apocryphal.

I sure love mine.

After 1971, Airstream no longer produced trailers under 21'. They finally resumed production of short trailers in 1999 with the re-introduction of the Bambi. That's a 28 year deficit of short Airstreams! No wonder there are fewer short ones around.

Primarily they are so expensive because I have one and everyone wants to be like Mike! Ha Ha, really it is supply and demand that dictates price.

10 years ago we looked at a Caravele being sold by a private owner.

Good shape and the price was 5K. We later saw it on a RV consignment lot and the price went to 6.500 but didn't sell. A couple years later we, by chance saw the unit pulling into a site at Allegany State Park in New York state. An American from Buffalo bought the Caravele from the Canadian owner, a private buy.

We eventually found a 23' that is what we wanted. The dual axle was more disireable for stable towing and the extra room was best for us. The extra weight was not an issue as the aerodynamic Airstream is such an easy tow.

Fred, help me out here, but as I recall there were something just over 240 Bambi 16s produced between the Jackson Center and Los Angeles plants from 1961 to 1963. There were far fewer of the 17' '64 Bambi IIs produced. The 17' Caravel was produced in limited numbers from '65 to '67 based on the Bambi II shell, but with a different interior. '68 was a transition year and from '68-'71 or so they built the 18' Caravels. I've never seen any production numbers or even reasonable guesses on either the '65-67 or '68-'71 Caravels, but there weren't many produced compared to the larger trailers. All of the '60s and '70s vintage sub-21' trailers are pretty rare, and are commanding premium prices now.

How many 65 Caravels, the highest serial # for Ohio I have captured is JO175816 (Ohio started at seq#500 that year for “double beds”), and California is SO175207. So that makes it at least 316 and 207 for the two factories. So, I’d say between 550 and 600.

It wasn't until 1969 did Airstream assign each trailer a unique 3 digit sequence #.

I Didn't Know HOW Special...

I am fortunate to have two of the previously mentioned units. I have a 1964 Bambi II 17' that I have owned since 1984 and a 1971 Caravel 18' I purchased in December '06. True, they are not units to own if you want to be left alone at the campground. But, I don't mind giving tours. I love to talk AS.
