A "soft step" scares me. If the step bracket is rusted enough to be soft, I'd be worried about other frame issues (and/or a significant leak around the door).
I have definitely seen mid to late '80's Aistreams with holes rusted in the frame rails, more typically in back near the bumper (check the inside of the bumper storage compartment). I once saw one where the previous owners sheathed the outside of the rear frame rails in aluminum to hide the rust holes! I have also seen one case where there were rust holes through the rails on the tongue! A little surface rust is OK, but if you see holes, significant flaking, or very deep pitting, be very careful. Also check the frame outriggers at the front and back of the wheel wells for holes - these might not scare me away if they were the only
frame issues because damage here is not atyipical, but you'd need to plan to have them repaired to arrest any further deterioration since the wheels kick up much moisture when pulling in the rain.
Good luck! '80's Airstreams can be some of the best Airstreams out there if maintained properly. We often miss our '85 25' Sovereign
that we sold when we wanted to go a little larger.
