A "soft step" scares me. If the step bracket is rusted enough to be soft, I'd be worried about other frame issues (and/or a significant leak around the door).

I have definitely seen mid to late '80's Aistreams with holes rusted in the frame rails, more typically in back near the bumper (check the inside of the bumper storage compartment). I once saw one where the previous owners sheathed the outside of the rear frame rails in aluminum to hide the rust holes! I have also seen one case where there were rust holes through the rails on the tongue! A little surface rust is OK, but if you see holes, significant flaking, or very deep pitting, be very careful. Also check the frame outriggers at the front and back of the wheel wells for holes - these might not scare me away if they were the only frame issues because damage here is not atyipical, but you'd need to plan to have them repaired to arrest any further deterioration since the wheels kick up much moisture when pulling in the rain.

Good luck! '80's Airstreams can be some of the best Airstreams out there if maintained properly. We often miss our '85 25' Sovereign that we sold when we wanted to go a little larger.

I just bought a 87 sovereign for 13.5k Refrigerator is not working- was in process of going through long list seller got bit huffy, pretty much said take it or leave it , I took it. There was another buyer coming the next day. It looks great will put in shop next wk for long check out . We will see and I will hope for the best, it was local and I didn't have to travel and it was just what I was looking for. Not too big sleep 4. It has been kept covered, that was biggie for me. Just not that many out there sometimes without driving 1000 miles. I'm terrified of all the details I must learn and how to maintain and grease everything . ,,,,

Do you have a 2008 Safari? Why are you looking? Book value on the trailer you are looking at could be 3 grand maybe, but asking price could be 15 grand. Before we bought out first trailer we tried to by a 1988 Excella 1000 34' 3 axle with rear twin beds. The man wanted 18 grand. Book value was 3 grand. He pulled that trailer with a Lincoln Navigator. We ultimately ended up with a new trailer.

You know you are replying to a two-year old post, right? It looks to me like she changed her mind about the other trailer...
