sounds reasonable ... i'm newish here too & bought my '72 Sovereign last August for $6k .. it's 100% original ..looks absolutely beautiful... minor exterior dings, floor very good but furnace & water heater shot i think .. needed new tires & will need new axles i've been told. throw in new couch foam / mattresses / curtains / fabrics / a/c shroud / window seals / lights / modern power converter / roof vent lids / LED lights/ vista sky-lights/ figure another $10K ...

is it worth that for resale value ?? not sure .. think i paid too much ! oh well, it's more than just an "investment" right ?? !!

Is it an RV frig and john? If not, it still might fit your static needs. Rehabs are expensive, unless you value your time at zero and do all the work yourself. Look around a lot and buy the best you can find.

You have not mentioned the frame. If the frame and shell are in good shape and you have to do a frame off to replace the floor $2,000 is closer to a good price.

So much depends on the condition of the unit you are looking at. Are there any hidden issue such as a droopy frame or floor rot? How good was the restoration? Does everything work? A unit of that vintage should have new axles, do you know if they have been replaced yet? How old are the tires? Tires should be replaced every five years or so.

Also, consider that an un-restored unit with a good frame and body should sell for $2,000 to $3,000 and then a full frame-off restoration could easily cost $30,000 to $40,000 or more (done professionally.)

If you are confident with all the above issues, then that price sounds reasonable to me.

You can brighten up the interior by replacing those old ceiling light lenses.

Also, it's very easy to paint the headliners with a good interior paint. Makes a whole new interior look.

Offer him what you are comfortable with and set a limit! You will have to work on it so leave yourself some room and have fun! Too much for me may be a steal for others!

It all depends on condition and the level of competency applied in the restoration.

If the trailer was nicely and properly restored, I say it is worth $6,500 because the fixes you mention cost money.

Unfortunately, it is very difficult indeed to know the true condition of the floor and the frame on an assembled Airstream. The things you really need to see are covered up.

Maybe the seller has some construction photos?

I did a quick and dirty fix on a 75 31'er early this year. I would say that there is enough life in it to sell it for $6,500 as it sits in the pictures.

Robert8755, Welcome to Air Forums. You may be getting the aluminum disease! It is devastating to the pocket book and and a good nights sleep.

There are appraisers for these old Airstreams. I needed one to get my agreed value insurance on my 86. It is very difficult to value a vintage Airstream without inspecting it. You describe a good shell and a good interior. Your trailer is a top of the line trim level International giving the trailer better cabinets and more features.

BUT... The seventies trailers are plagued with rear end separation due to a leaks and the lack of good frame rust protection. The rear shell support can rust away. Jump on the rear bumper and see if the body separates slightly from the frame rails. If so, then a frame repair is in order. And there is a chance of floor rot due to leaks, and there is a good chance the axles need replaced unless already done so. It might take $3k or $4k to do this running gear renewal.

I see renewed vintage Airstreams in the classifieds anywhere from 12k to 20k. These are trailers with documentation and receipts showing the work done. Short trailers are worth more than long ones. Long ones are better for actually using.

It is my opinion that a good shell is worth $5k or so. I think $6500 is not unreasonable for this 71 Sovereign International.
