1961 Overlander 26'

been lurking for about a week or two now and just registerd today. I have learned a ton already and have read enough to make my eyes bleed....but in a good way! need help with a fair price to offer on the 1961 i just put a deposit on it but still dickering over the final price. under side is in pretty good shape from the looks i got. floors are solid with the exception of the bathroom,its solid but yet not solid enough if that makes any sense. all eletric outlets work,lights as well. plumbing is untested so im going on the assumption that its going to need work. the exterior......well the exterior......yea the picts pretty much sum it up. no leaks on roof or windows. Hes asking $3000 i came back with $1500 and its been back and forth for the past few days of me explaining things that might and will need to be done. thanks for any help. thanks also for your great forum and all your knowledge.........BRIAN

Welcome to the forums!

Looks like some good work has been done and some bad work as well...There is too many unknowns for me to go any higher then you have and soft spots in the floor can led to possible frame issues. How much weight has the custom work added? It's hard to get a good feel through pics.

Greetings Brian!

Despite the beauty of the wood interior appointments, I think that your offer was a good one. There are many unknowns induced by both the interior and exterior modifications. Things that would most concern me include:
  • What kind of damage might that exterior paint be hiding. At the very minimum, that paint will add an extra level of difficulty returning the exteior to a polished aluminum finish if that is what you desire.
  • Getting all of that paint off of the furnace and water heater vent fairings will be a real chore, and will likely require the use of dental picks to get the paint residue out of the seams.
  • All of the clearance, running lights, and tail lights will likely require replacement as the chances of getting the paint off of the plastic parts is slim to none in my experience.
  • While it is true that nearly every Vintage coach will need new tires and often new wheels to replace split rims; there is no question that the coach will need new tires as it has been much more than a decade since trailer tires were available with white walls.
  • The interior wood is beautiful, but if it is 3/4" thick strips of hardwood flooring which is what it looks like; the weight increase could be very substantial. These early 1960s coaches were not designed with a tremendous amount of excess carrying capacity so that it is not difficult to overload the chassis (frame as well as axles).
  • The staining on the shower walls could indicate the need for some attention. I do know that one of the walls is a Formica covered product that may have been exposed to moisture such that replacement may be necessary.

What an interesting Overlander! (I'm looking at it through a partially shielded face...the paint makes me wince but at the same time the whole thing is so darn interesting.)

It's only 2 years newer than our Overlander. I like the travel decals on the door... and the interior looks so homey! (In a good way.)

I love the interior also. The outside is a love/hate kinda thing. I love that it was painted on there in 61 as a tribute to the beetles yellow submarine and survived all these years. Its the kind of old school americana that doesent live in our society today. I plan on having it photographed by a friend who puts a new spin on old things. I already know what the outside holds in terms of work. I've buffed cars and trucks on the side for almost 20 years and polishing tanks was a skill I learned early on. I'm fairly turned off by the unknown of future plumbing,subfloor,and electrical work but if I wanted easy I would buy a 2011 :-)

Does anyone happen to know the height of a 61 overlander? I need to have it brought 2 hours to my house with out towing. Was thinking I might be able to have a rollback bring it but am unsure if ill be overheight. I can gain 6 inches with deflated tires and lack of an AC unit on top I'm guessing another 8-10 inches.

Top of the front roof vent, not the top of the A/C. I didn't think yours had an A/C.

It is funny what you find on these Forums. This trailer rolled into my shop last week. Fortunately most of the paint was already stripped off.
