STAR RV Warranty

Hello All,

Getting ready to purchase our first airstream, 2007 Bambi 19ft, and the dealer is pushing a STAR RV Warranty (Diamond Coverage). Just curious to see if anyone is familiar and if they are satisfied with it?? They are offering it for $1500 and covers a 6 year time frame.


Any info is appreciated.

Hi Gary. These just don't make any sense. You aren't buying a new unit, so the lack of an original Airstream 2 year warranty may be a selling point on the dealer's part. Some major electromechanical parts of an Airstream have longer warranties that continue beyond the first 24 months. Dealers wouldn't push extended warranties if they weren't a solid profit point for their business. A lot of conditions apply, so you aren't getting blanket coverage anyway.

As Bob said, some of the individual components carry a warranty longer than 2 years. In addition some of the component manufacturers will offer you warranty extensions.

My Classic has passed it's fifth year of service. I've had two items fail out of warranty. One was a skylight and the other was the air conditioner shroud. The shroud failed from UV exposure and while the Dometic A/C unit was under warranty (from the manufacturer, not Airstream), Dometic failed to honor my request since they stated that shrouds are only warranted 90 days.

Personally extended warranties on travel trailers are really a waste of money. Most items that fail are going to be classified as wear and tear issues. Your big expenses are going to revolve around two items. The refrigerator or the air conditioner. On both you can get extensions from the manufacturer of those devices if you are so inclined, and for a lot less money.

Extended warranties are a HUGE profit center, being they are on Automotive products, tools or RV's.
I am sure if you look across the spectrum of all things you have bought and what you would have paid for all the warranties offered you would be far behind.
I personally would not buy an extended warranty on anything.

Save your money or put the money you would spend on a warranty into a savings account and use it yourself for any items that break.

It seems like every time that I have paid for an extended warranty on an item and something does go wrong, it always seems to be something that is excluded from the warranty.

Tell them to stick it and if they give you that condescending laugh, bail. Extended warranty is a shuck.

Just went thru the same dilemma myself and I cancelled the Easy Care Warranty. Still waiting to get my money back, so we will see. You may want to look at the Dometic web site for their 30% off sale on extended warranties for refers and A/C-heat pumps. Those are two of the most expensive things to repair. Still kind of goes against my grain, but it gives my wife a little piece of mind and I did have a refer board go out on me in an previous RV.

Keeping my fingers crossed. I have a fifteen year old airstream with all original components. All I have replaced are some circuit boards on fridge and water heater.
About $120.00 each. Both appliances work better than they did before.
If it needs an extended warranty then I don't want to own it.

Hi, plain and simple, never buy an extended warranty unless it is from the manufacturer. [Airstream, Ford, Hoover, Etc.]

Tell the dealer you will buy the warranty for what they pay, not for the marked up price, and see if they bite! They get anywhere between half and 1/3 of that $1500, so it's a great money maker for them. If your sales person is honest they will tell you that, and offer it for what they pay, ie he doesn't make a dime on the warranty sale, but makes his money on the Airstream sale.

Many dealers will not accept an after market "extended warranty policy" for repairs.

Why?????????????????

When you call them for approval's, no problem.

But, when you send in the paper work, for EXACTLY what you quoted them, and for what they approved, the story changes, RAPIDLY.

They wind up paying the dealer a small fraction of what they previously approved.

We, will NOT accept any extended warranty policy.

We will do the repairs that you wish, provide complete paper work, and "you" must then deal with the extended warranty folks.

We promise you two things, that we only do top notch work, AND that you will have one devil of a time, getting reimbursed.

Skip the extended warranty, and put the money where you can better use it, namely back into your checking account.

As you can see, others also put the "NO SALE" sign on extended warranty policies.

It "IS" a huge profit center for the selling dealer, many times exceeding the profit they made on the trailer.

There is not a single failure that can happen to the Airstream, that costs $1500.00.

If things are functioning correctly with the Airstream at this point, then the long term life expectancy, has already proved itself.

Thanks all for your response. That just solidifies my gut feeling on this thing so looks like we are $1500 richer!! Not really of course, still need to buy a hitch!!

A good hitch, like a Reese full sway control, costs ball park,half of the $ 1500.00.

Now, you have all that extra money left.

More beer? More goodies for the Airstream? Something for the wife? Hey, maybe something for you, too.
