Factory Warranty Transfers on Sale?

Hi all,

Does anyone know if the 2 year factory warranty from Airstream is transferable on sale? Looking at a trailer that is a year old and would like to know if the warranty would transfer to me upon purchase. Any insight into this is appreciated.

Thanks,
Ron

The warranty should be transferable. Call AS with the VIN and they will be happy to tell you if it is or not.

We bought our ASLYG MH used with 8 or 9 months of the two year warranty left and AS honored the rest of the two year period for us. It worked out very well as we had a lot of "loose ends" attended to.

Good luck! BTW, buying a unit with factory warranty left on it is a very reassuring plus. If you like the unit, scoop it up ASAP!

I concur. The 2-year warranty goes with the rig, not the owner. You'll need to determine when it first went into service (was purchased) to know how much of the warranty is left. (We bought our 06 in 2007 new and got the whole 2 years starting with our purchase date in 2007.) Airstream should be able to tell you using the VIN number as Michigander points out...or perhaps you can get that information from the original owner's paperwork if available to you.

A friend bought a one year old trailer, and did transfer the warrantee, but had to have the trailer inspected by an Airstream dealer, and then pay a fee. I believe the fee was $200, or $250.

My guess is that if you are buying the trailer from a private party you'd most likely have to go through more of a warranty transfer process...but if you are buying it from an AS dealer I would think you would not have to pay any warranty transfer fee. A dealer should handle that for you.

We paid no fee, however, there was a warranty transfer application form that I filled out and sent to AS.

After reviewing the AS website I think they have changed their policy since 2007 when we bought ours. It sounds like they now charge a fee and require an inspection.

Thanks everyone for your input. Looked at the manual online and it sounds like there is a $250 transfer fee as SteveH posted above. There are some caveats that eliminate the eligibility of a trailers warranty to be transferred (auction purchase, repossession and salvaged title are listed) and an inspection by an AS dealer is required.

Thanks again,
Ron

In early 2011 purchased a 2008 used Safari (original sale not until late 2009) and transferred the warranty without a fee by contacting AS. However many of the appliances (microwave, air conditioner, etc) are covered by the manufacturer's warranty, not AS, and may not be transferable.
