Just remember, the listed seller and the current owner of the Airstream had nothing to do with this scam. They were unaware of any of this. The trailer most likely was listed some time back in a real ad. The person who will be hurt will be the person who's account was cracked. He will have to change his ID and do a bunch of paperwork with ebay. I hope no money has changed hands on this one! BTW did anyone notice the category that this sale was listed under? It was reproductions of vintage cloths and shoes.
And here's the reply from the listed email address:
Hello and thanks for your interest in my Airstream,Best price $5600 incl.
shipping if you buy it today.
First of all, let me assure you about the performances and about the
condition of it. As you can see in the images the Airstream is in a perfect shape
with no damage,no scratches or dents, no hidden defects, and it is as
advertised.
I'm the owner with the title in hand and the transaction can be completed
quickly. You will receive all the papers and documentation, the clear title and
all the bills and invoices. There is no liens on the title and you will not
have any complications about the registration and licensing the Airstream.
The trailer is sent to a local warehouse, here in San Jose , CA and from
here it will be shipped from. I'm in a trip in Europe and they will handle the
shipping for me! The trailer is ready for delivery as we speak, sealed and
packaged so we can close the deal as soon as you're ready. To tell you the truth
I am forced to sell this trailer as my sister is very sick and need a marrow
transplant and as she need it quickly I have to sell all my units as soon as
possible to help her. I am right now with her in Ireland where the
transplant will be made.So even it is pretty hard to do it,to save a life I think it
worse.
The price for the trailer is $5,600. The shipping costs are deducted from
the price so there will not be any additional costs or charges for you
regarding the shipping. This is the final and total amount to pay.
I will only close the deal through eBay Motors Protection program.I am
eligibile for their protection for transactions up to $20,000.s against fraud and
material misrepresentation through the Vehicle Purchase Protection program.
This program is provided for free on all eligible passenger vehicle
transactions completed on the eBay Motors site. There's no sign-up, opt-in, or
registration necessary. Your passenger vehicle purchase is protected for up to
$20,000 or the vehicle purchase price, whichever is lower.
If we will agree the terms of the sale, i will register the transaction with
eBay Motors. You will send the money to their staff, they will verify the
payment and if everything is in order, they will advise me to ship the unit.
After you'll receive the item, you'll have 3 days period for inspection. If you
decided to keep the item, ebay will release the payment to me. If, for some
reason at all, you don't want to keep them, there will be no question refund
back. But, i'm sure this will not be the case.
So, ebay will release the payment to me only after you'll receive and test
the trailer.
I hope you'll agree with my terms and we'll finalize the transaction smooth
and fast. If you're further interested, REPLY WITH YOUR FULL SHIPPING ADDRESS
AND YOUR COMPLETE CONTACT INFORMATION and let's conclude this deal. As azflycaster mentioned, Scam!
That same ID has two other buy it now sales going. A 2004 John Deere fron loader with attachments for $45 and a Polaris Ranger 6 x 6 for $12. I understand the Mona Lisa will be going next, most likely for $149.99.
I remember the real listing about 4 months ago. It didn't make its reserve then. I wonder who the winning bidder is, and if they are sharp enough to catch this scam. Jeff
I bought it. Janet's was the only other message in this thread when I saw it and I was gone! I hadn't come across that scam before, but it looked like it probably was, BUT, he who hesitates...
There was absolutely no risk in buying it, so why not. What's the worst that could have happened? I would have owned a 2002 34' with slide-out for $5600. I could have sold that to my brother for BIG bucks!
So, now being the proud new owner of a 2002 34' w/slide-out I then pulled out the membership book, called 411, got the members' number, called him there. Found out he was down south (he left the number on a pretty funny outgoing message), and spoke with him. He says this is the third time this has happened and Ebay has been totally useless to him. The trailer was originally listed on Ebay in October but I'm guessing he was asking real money for it when he really sold it so it didn't draw anyone's attention here!
So then I did exactly as the seller said not to do -- I sent him a message through the "contact seller" button asking about payment and pick-up terms! If only I could see his guys face when he opens up that email! He can handle the security issues -- it's his account...
The other two items he is selling are fraudulent too. The same "contact me by email." But, notice those are actual auctions without buy-it-now prices. This scammer was just after ~$6K on an airstream. SO SORRY SUCKER -- all that effort and NO MONEY FOR YOU!!
I would do that again and again and again. What if it were real?
It didn't take but 10 minutes of my time to find out it isn't real and took a big ticket fraud item off Ebay. I was going to bid $10,000.00 on each of the other two items to kill them, but the system would only do it in increments so it wasn't worth it. I'm sure the account owner will figure it out when he gets my email. If not, I'll contact Ebay in 2 days.
Oh well -- let me know when the next one comes along -- I'll do it again!

And here's the reply from the listed email address:
I never bothered to send him an email. Looks like the same type of letters used in the Nigerian scams.
Looks like they're always trying new angles on these things. I think I posted this here before -- I wound up buying a leather recliner after a guy from England bought it to have it shipped to him. I knew that one was fishy so I contacted the seller saying when that deal falls through, I'd still be interested. I wound up with the chair...

I've been getting some interesting e-mails lately that appear to be from Ebay saying that someone was not able to pay me through my paypal account - and to send my paypal information - very interesting.....
Oh, and small correction. The WBCCI member wasn't down south -- I guess I assumed he was. Turns out he's in the same state, just a different area code. Some vacation...

That is a neat Airstream - for a nice price really - gives you a clean slate to do pretty much anything you wanted inside.
Lets see you could rig it up on a lake for the winter and use it as a warming hut for your ice fishing clients.
Or change it to a mobile blood bank
Or how about a testing facility for schools, trades, or even the new Moped licensing office for those local rental places that now have to have their clients write a M1 license in order to rent a Moped (in Ontario)
Or a Mobile Internet Bar
Or how about the WBCCI HQ buy it - get some real up to date marketing material and go on the road to all the RV Shows in North America and call it the Membership Recruiting Mobile. Or show up at Unit Rallys promoting all the great Intra-Clubs they have to offer.
E-Bay can be great and then it can be a disaster.
Like anything else - you just have to be really careful and use your common sense.

Those are called phishing. They will look like they are from paypal or ebay and will include a link to a paypal or ebay looking "verify your account" page. Once you log in you will get a system is down message or a try it again later. Basicly at that point your account is gone along with any credit cards you use with paypal. NEVER USE A LINK ON AN EMAIL. Go directly to the site from your browser. It's not a nice world out there. Check out this link (trust me) for more information about phishing. http://www.antiphishing.org/
I am starting to worry about those rock guards I bought off ebay, naw they will be here tomorrow
