Angry BEWARE SCAMMER looking at our ads

I was pulled into several emails with an individual I finally realized was attempting to scam us. The email was from a Justin Collins. Much like the others posted here and thank goodness for the Forum. Once I got suspicious I looked at the forum for similar experiences that verified my thoughts and so I played him along with my plan of how the sale would have to work and guess what-no more emails from Justin. After some initial emails about pictures, etc., here was his proposal:

"Thanks for getting back to me. I will pay you $36,000 for it and i will like to inform you that i will be having our local transporters to come to your location to inspect the motorhome and moreover I will have to make a down payment to you so as to make you reserve the motorhome for me for not getting it sold to other interested buyer's till the inspection and the sale will be done as it would take time to get all of that done

I will make a down payment of $2000 and also I will include the inspection fees which will cost for $2500 and mind you I want the payment made out to you by check and also as soon as the funds of $4500 have been cleared into your account I will like you to have the motorhome ready for the inspection process and also you will make the remaining funds of $2500 payable to the transporters to cover for the inspection fees and all other expenses during inspection

I will be looking forward for proceedings to you and also get back to me with the full names, mailing address and phone number the check can be made payable to you

I will be looking forward to hear from you

Regards
Justin"

My response:

"Justin,

Can you tell me more about who you are or who you represent or your company and will this be a cashierís check, etc. This all sounds very good but there have been some personal transactions gone bad and would like more information from you. Frank said we could do the $36,000 but again would feel more comfortable knowing who we are working with on this. Youíre not a Nigerian who is in hiding and has a lot of money and you will send me a check to hold it but you need money to get it here or something along those lines, are you?"

His Response:

"Would you need my full name, address and phone number ? I am looking at 2 to 3 weeks to finalize the deal and I will need you to get back to me for further proceedings

Thanks
Justin"

My response

"Yes, we would need that information and the transportation company you are using here in the states. I believe there are some you can use that you can pay directly and keep us out of that transaction. Any funds to use would have to be in a cashierís check. Also if the sale is agreed upon then the funds would have to clear our bank before the motorhome moves."

We haven't heard back from "Justin". I think there is a team of people working this because of differenet tones I noted in his emails. Looks like we still get to take the Clipper to Fort Wilderness at Disney World. I am glad we are no rush to sell and hope to educate those who are not to fall for this scam.

We also got an email from Justin responding to our add.
This question was the clue that this might be a scam.
- Would you feel comfortable selling the trailer to me as i live oversea here in England ?
I told him we were happy to sell it to him in England for US $ CASH.
No response from Justin.

I have the source shut down in this case. It will always be an issue that we cannot control completely. Sounds like everyone is up to date on recognizing a scam.

A thread on the topic: Savvy Classifieds advice

Google "cashier check scam" (in quotes to search on the exact phrase) and you will see some good source pages for further study.

frankandsue, thanks for forwarding the raw email info.

Best wishes for your sale to an honest person!

Thumbs down Same fool, uses two names

We also have a trailer posted for sale, and "he" sent us the first e-mail inquiry; however, the idiot used the name "Justin Collins" in two e-mails and "John" in another. The irony is that he claimed to be from England at first, but today's note was a whopper....nearly verbatim of the first post here. Besides the poor grammar, his thought processes are ridiculously outlandish!! While we enjoyed stringing him along, we are posting this as a warning. If it sounds too good to be true, it is!!

Hijack, or Hi Jack

Dear CanoeStream. I love your avatar... now is that some kind of special body you can put on a Smart car or what? I own a business and that shape vehicle if real could actually be an interesting and attention getting gizmo.

I may have one of those trying to hook me presently. Sometimes all you gotta do is ask their forum name. If they bother to respond and they joined yesterday, well you know the rest. What a waist of my time.

Forward any detailed email info to me. "Death to chocolate!" [or: I get to keep any dark Theobroma cacao goodies reported.]

Honestly -- you can't go wrong with gifting Gail Ambrosius truffles... 24 pieces for $42 -- a pair per night -- mmmmmm-mmm-mmm!

"Justin Collins" tried the same thing with me. Then I also heard from another person who tried the same thing.

Not sure if it is ok to post the messages back and forth, but they are funny. I can't take credit for them really though, cause my hubby is a closet comedian and thought it would be fun to play with them. Start at the bottom and you can read the back and forth:

ok,get back to me with your full name and address to get the check sent immediately

Hi Kenneth, I have sold the item, but I do have a trash can full of soiled baby diapers. It will only cost you 2500.00 to ship to your country. Using your shipping company is good, since my credit is awful. Will you send me a check or money order today? I will try to get more soiled diapers for you if you can send the chekc soon!

Hi holder310. Looks like a duck, walks like a duck... it is a duck. Best advice is to ignore it; don't reply to it. Your email program probably has a way of designating 'ignore' so you'll see no further messages from this individual.

I would like more info if you would please. Look at my post #3 in this thread. Please capture (copy & paste) the full raw email info as noted there. Then click my username in this post and PM (private message) that info to me.

Thanks,
Bob
