additional taxes due ????

i bought my new AS about 4 month ago from a dealer...

now i'm getting a letter that there are additional taxes due... the letter is written straight forward, no explanantion where the difference is coming from etc... essentially just saying... "send us some money"

do i have to? do i owe this money? should the dealer eat the cost of their mistake? if i really have to pay they should send me a updated sales contract ?

i signed a sales contract outlining everything, they can't just change their mind 3 or 4 months later???

thanks for your input!

Who is "US"? If it is the "Stealer" I would ask them if they know how to shinny up a rope full of razor blades and if so tell him to go ahead.

If it is the State of Calif. as a sales tax you may be behind a rock.

I would think anyone wanting additional tax monies would send that request on a document with at least a letterhead. Sure doesn't look official. I wouldn't send them any money.

How many will TRY to come to you later for more money is directly proportional to how many government agencies there are in the State of California.

Without a CA DMV or County of XYZ letterheaded tax bill there's no way I'd do anything but shred that one.

It's possible, in these tough times, that the dealer didn't send in the taxes you paid, and they may even have told the county some C&B story that you falsified your residency or something. Or it could in fact be a retroactive tax increase.

Definitely aks for more documentation. This has an odor about it.

Send a message via Yahoo to Alwhisman
Your contract shows you paid the taxes. Next you'll get a letter saying the purchase price changed as well........right!

.....you can't get plates with taxes not being paid

No one on Air Forums can give you any advice that's worth anything - this of course doesn't mean they won't try. Get in touch with the agency that sent the bill and find out what the story is. After you hear what they have to say you can then make up your mind what you want to do. They are the very best - and only reliable - source of information concerning this bill. Anything else is hot air - at best.

If it were me, I'd contact your State's revenue office (not sure if this is what it would be called) and ask them if in fact the agency that sent the letter is acting on their behalf. If not, I suspect a fraud investigation would be triggered.

Only Ca residents can advise, if they have had the same type bill. If yours is unique to Ca then you can post results other than just paying.

A former IRS agent told me if you acknowledge receipt of a bill in any form, even by telephone you open the door to legitimizing the debt. If it's a big bill talk to a lawyer.

Contact your county tax assessor/collector

the letter does not say ANYTHING about what the tax is due on...real estate, automobile, trailer, wife, kids, goats...nothing....this looks like someone fishing for a sucker....but check it out with your local tax office BEFORE you pay anyone anything...this smells like a big load of B-S...

I read the letter again. Is it asking you to send $ to an "licensed agent for the state" rather than the state sales tax office itself? I would contact the state attorney general's office. They might be interested, or at least tell you if this is a scam (which it now sounds like to me).

Also call the dealer and see what they can tell you.

Sounds fishy to me too. I would contact the dealer and see if they could shed some light on this. If they cannot, they can probably inform you of the appropriate action to take. Goverment Offices are required to use official letterhead, also collection offices would use official lettgerhead. My guess, it is a scam to see who will bite. A lot of scams come out this time of year. So beware.

have you tried running the 'agent' and the address (separately & together) through google to see if anything shows up on them?

I would try to contact the California State Board of Equalization, and ask them about it. They are the ones that collect sales tax.
