Contact your county tax assessor/collector

the letter does not say ANYTHING about what the tax is due on...real estate, automobile, trailer, wife, kids, goats...nothing....this looks like someone fishing for a sucker....but check it out with your local tax office BEFORE you pay anyone anything...this smells like a big load of B-S...

I read the letter again. Is it asking you to send $ to an "licensed agent for the state" rather than the state sales tax office itself? I would contact the state attorney general's office. They might be interested, or at least tell you if this is a scam (which it now sounds like to me).

Also call the dealer and see what they can tell you.

Sounds fishy to me too. I would contact the dealer and see if they could shed some light on this. If they cannot, they can probably inform you of the appropriate action to take. Goverment Offices are required to use official letterhead, also collection offices would use official lettgerhead. My guess, it is a scam to see who will bite. A lot of scams come out this time of year. So beware.

have you tried running the 'agent' and the address (separately & together) through google to see if anything shows up on them?

I would try to contact the California State Board of Equalization, and ask them about it. They are the ones that collect sales tax.

i'm sorry guys, my bad... but i didn't find it important to include the letterhead...

there is (of course) a letterhead...

from the dealership i bought the trailer from and the mail to address is the dealership also (but their accounting office in some other city pretty far away....)

regadless this letter is very unprofessional... doesn't indicate for what the taxes are due (even tho we all know...) this is just not the right way to approach this... and my 4 month old AS still has a water leak the service department can't find...

this whole thing is just odd...

A vehicle dealer or any retailer is an agent to collect sales and other vehicle taxes.

Nonetheless, they have to tell you what it is for, and in this case, explain the mistake. Contact them and ask them what it is about. Dealers miscalculate taxes from time to time; so do buyers. A telephone call may well clear this up quickly.

In that case I would consider using the tax thing as leverage to get your leak fixed. I'm no lawyer but I would expect your purchase agreement is a binding contract and if the dealership made a mistake on the taxes that is their responsibility.

Terry,

Is that the Gov't agency that works to make the tax you pay equal to the gross amount of your pay check?

That would be them. I found an advance copy of the 2009 California state income tax form (simplified):

1) Gross earnings:$_______________

2) Send it in.

if this is a scam, you'll probably find that address listed in google from someone that already has been scammed. scams, like airstreams tend to last a very long time.

I notice on the bottom...it says...Please remit to: ?????

Who is the entity listed...you left that out of the scan

A phone call to that "remit to:" entity could answer a handfull
of these questions. Retaining a lawyer can be costly. Middle school
and High school students often "pull adults in" with a portion
of a story. Things omitted are sometimes omitted for a reason.
