About to take the plunge.....

We have been shopping for an Airstream for some time. I have read numerous threads about all of the pitfalls of the older trailer, BUT I really want a pre-'70 with real wood interior. Mid twins are a must because my first project will be to add bunks for the kids.

Found this '68 Overlander that looks great to me. Going to look tomorrow. I am amazed at what all of you experts can tell by looking at photos, so here are some photos.

How many kids do you have? When I did my first remodel. We had two. I put bunks on one side and a small dinette that sat four on the other. Now we have two more so I am redoing it again. But a shell off. It really needed it the first time. I am putting to couches in that the backs will flip up to form bunks. And a fold up table for the middle. Also putting in a bed in the front for wife and myself. The fold out couch didn't cut it.

We have four. Planning to bunk over the twins. Found great photos of that on another site. Adults will sleep in the front. I was wondering if the front "bed" would be adequate for the adults. We have purchased very reasonably priced "memory foam" mattresses on the web for antique beds that are odd sized. It is quite easy to cut them to fit. I will likely do this for the beds in the trailer as well.

For now, we want to get a functional unit that we can use for short trips close to home. Mods and restoration to follow. This one is by far the cleanest looking one I have seen online. Hopefully it will be as good looking when I get there.

Is it possible to find one this vintage that doesn't need substantial floor repair? Reading the forum would lead me to believe that it is not.

I have 3 with no need of floor repair, and have never been done. A 71, 74 and 75. So, yep real possible.

Welcome to the forums. I agree that they really are great.

Looks like you found a winner. I have a 66 TW and love it. My floor appears to be completely solid in the main area of the Airstream. The only floor damage I have is in the left rear corner by the access hole for the electrical cord and the water connection. I am in the process of removing the old, not original, sheet vinyl floor that covers the front area, center section and the rear bath area. So far no floor rot or floor repairs anywhere. I hate to say this cuz I don't want to jinx myself, but it does not leak anywhere. I consider myself fortunate. I believe my unit was built right and has had pretty good care the last 46 years.

Drove down and purchased the 1968 Overlander Twin. I am making a list of projects already. It is in sufficiently good condition to camp in with the exception of the missing front couch cushion.

Glad that you got it. It is nice when they are in good enough shape to camp in right away. It allows you to plan your renovation work better and prioritize about what needs to be done first.
