2019 - Airstream mandating power awnings ?

not sure if others have posted on this, but this makes me pretty upset.

I just got a quote on a 2019 28' international RB and was told that in 2019 Airstream is mandating the purchase of :

Window awning package - Must add upgrade also on 30rb models $1,000.00
Power zipdee awning - must add $2741.00
Rear view camera $500.00

I would never get a power awning, rear view camera is great, but they are basically mandating almost $4,000 in awnings on 28' for 2019 ??

can anyone chime in on this ?

Is a dealer telling you what Airstream is mandating? Perhaps a sales pitch and not something from Airstream.

I just went to RV One to build a quote and the base MSRP is now higher (2019 pricing?) and the backup camera, power awning and awning package are checked by default.

The local-to-Austin dealer told me they wouldn't order a single-AC 26U, too, so what's possible isn't always what one is told. Perhaps if that options box is checked by default now it's a "custom order" to get the manual awnings? It would be worth calling Airstream about if the dealer isn't helpful, because I think the fiddly manual awnings will age better than fiddly electric ones.

I posted in Globetrotter Forum. We were told the same thing. We ordered our 2019 Globetrotter and they were not optional. I called Airstream factory and the sales department told me they could not discuss 2019 model details until late May.

Sounds like a not-so-subtle way to increase the price without increasing the MSRP.

It looks like MSRP has also gone up about 4.5%.

Exactly. don’t know what else to say other than am mystified how they could make these “options “ mandatory. 100% agree that the power awning will most certainly break down the road. The manual zip dees work great ; don’t get this ; really don’t. Follow the money trail But even then ...

And one other thing when asked what comes more on the 2019 since the base price is higher even not including the mandatory addons? Crickets from the salespeople and AS but they don’t mind charging you for it and giving a June delivery date. Well. What are we getting for that ?

It sounds like they will be standard equipment, not a mandatory option. Until Airstream comes out with the official new model year info, they are telling people that they are a mandatory option.

I really hate to see them force the power awnings on buyers. They have not been the model of reliability and for those of us that do a lot of boondocking, having another power draw and less reliability is not desirable. Hopefully it will not be the case and that it can be a manual awning on special orders.

As far as the full awning package, I love ours and can’t see any downside other then the cost which is relatively low.

My plan was to get the full awning package, just didn't want the electric since I've read all about the horror stories of on the forum. I did remark to the local sales person my concern about the power option. Hopefully it's covered under the initial warranty and I'll ensure any issues are noted.

Was he able to explain to you what was new for 2019? guess all globetrotters are basically a “new “but this should be their. Second year of production if it’s 2019, right? . Wasn’t 2018 their first production year technically ? am sure they are working out some bugs.

No, the local sales person could not say what changes are in store. I called Airstream directly and got the same story, they would publish the 2019 model details in May. I advised the local sales contact if the changes were considerable and not something we wanted we would back out of the deal.

Other than being able to charge more, there is no reason at all why they just can't provide manual awnings if the customer requests it. All the shells start out the same. The way things are now, I wouldn't buy an electric awning. I'll stick with my good ol' flying cloud with the manual awning!

Hey folks, last I heard Carefree also has awnings that work well on Airstreams. Or don't order the awning package and buy from Zip Dee.
For whatever it's worth

Just talked with Bay Area AS and was told you can order without power awning and deduct the $2,741.00 option and go manual. He had just ordered one for a client without power awning option. As for comment about 2 AC's in Buda CamperClinic, they claim they do 2 AC's on 25's and larger due to our weather, but you can still special order with single AC if you prefer; just have to special order and wait..

When I pushed that question, I was told they only order 2 AC's for their inventory on their lots; you can still order single AC. They would like you to buy what they have.

We ordered our 2018 1/2 International Serenity 25RB from Northwest Airstream in Seattle last month. They were very willing to order us a single AC, manual awning unit since they didn’t have any in stock. Only took about a month for Airstream to start the build. Hopefully it won’t take too long for them to ship from Ohio to Seattle.

To get to the bottom of this I ordered a 2019 Flying Cloud 19CB today. The power awning and awning package were not required, at least not in this size. I will update if that changes, but it was called into the factory and accepted in this configuration.

2018 they don’t have the mandate and not sure what models do have the mandate for 2019 but I️ know my 2019 28 rb had it . believe if you had ordered a 2019 the 25 ft would have had it.
