Lightbulb 1985 Excella 34' Immaculate $$$$

**FIRST POST** - Thanks in advance for helping a newbie

We are looking @ making our first Airstream purchase. We are looking @ a 1985 Airstream Excella 34', and it is immaculate and I believe it be 99% original. I already know, everyone will want pictures, but I do not have them @ this time, my apologies. But I will be more than glad to tell what I do know. Rear twin bed model, full bath with shower, all exterior LED lights, professional polish job, all tanks and all sytems function properly, all appliances work properly, all awnings, stone guard, weight distribution hitch. It really looks wonderful. However, we do have a budget we are trying to stay within. I know something is worth what someone will give. But what would be a good #$ for a 1985 in incredible condition? Thanks in advance.

Somewhere between $10 and $20k depending on condition of the floor and axles.

The asking price is at the top of that estimate. I am assuming the floor and axles will be in good shape. I believe I can make a fair assessment of the floor. How would I go about checking the axles properly? I am planning on going to physically check it out this weekend.

Check all the corners, compartments, and hidden spaces regarding the floors. A moisture meter would be helpful.

You can do a visual check of the axles to see if they are sagging. I am sure there is a good thread or three on the forum with pics of what to look for.

You may want to hire a professional to inspect the Airstream for you. He will know what to look for including axles and the dreaded rear end saging / separation.
Make sure he's experienced in Airstreams. There are threads on the forum that are specific to inspectors and proper methods to keep you out of the proverbial money pit on wheels.

Most 85's had OSB sub floors if it still has carpet buy a moisture meeter easy to check things out . If the axles are original I'm sure they need replaced , also look for frame rust , look underneath for damage . If it has been polished that is a big plus somebody took good care of it .

With respect to frame sag...I thought AS fixed that in '84-85 with a beefier channel in the frame??? I don't know of anyone in our unit with a mid to late '80s - 34 foot with frame sag I would think the original axles will be ready for replacement. That series of trailers had a moisture problem along the back seam above the bumper tray and moisture will be easily checked for in the rear compartments. You can remove the mattresses and flip up the plywood hinged deck to expose the compartments (there is a hinged prop under the deck to hold it up). Serious moisture/water will be obvious as mold or stain on the carpet along the wall. Moisture meter (pin type) is a good idea; even if this trailer doesn't work out, you will have it for the next one. If there is obvious addition of caulking along the back seam that might be a red flag.

What Ever YOU and SELLER...

You are already in LOVE, from your opinion of the unit. Seller has his price; you have a budget! Our opinions don't really matter! It's up to you and the seller. How badly do you want it in your possession? Just make SURE you're not getting a pig wearing pretty clothes! INSPECT, INSPECT!!!

Welcome to the forum LEB. Look on Onecraigs for price comparisons. See if any 34' Airstreams sold recently on E-bay as well. I'm sure you checked the forums classifieds first.
