Reading the Capetown to Cairo thread was a lot of fun and I started imagining other things.
Like the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
How cool would it be, if I were in charge of all things necessary, to strike a deal with the Olympic Committee to sponser/escort the torch run with an airstream as the official support vehicle. The designated Airstream following the runner, in turn, would be supported/trailed by other airstreams participating.
From Shanghai to Beijing perhaps, or some shorter distances with an ok from the Olympic Committee.. US/Chinese/Int'l..
Then I'll have an International Airstream Village set up near one of the venues. PARTY ON!
Publicity, goodwill, support for the US team, all seem to come together nicely under the international spotlights.
Seems safer too, and possibly opening up an export market, somewhere in Asia.
Just a thought as I row my boat gently down the (air)stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily.
This is what I enjoy about being a Forum member. To think that someone would even have the idea/Dream of taking a Caravan to CHINA! Wow! That is one of my dream trips.
As far as London, been there. What a bore! Too "Euro-centric."
It suffers from the 3 Ps - Pretentious people, poor food, and plodding pace.
IMHO

Don’t stop dreaming Ricky. I think you have a great idea. We should entertain more of such adventurous ideas, because some will make it.
The biggest problem is implementation. The Cape Town to Cairo to Cape Town plan appears to have a well-seasoned, knowledgeable and rational group of dedicated individuals who will see to it that the dream is realized, with or with out the WBCCI. It is not a high-risk venture, as some would have us believe.
For the most part, without the right leadership, participants and sponsors, a lot of ideas never get passed the talking stage. And even the good ideas will take years to plan, promote and get the critical mass onboard before they get on the road. The WBCCI has many safe caravans every year, but some of us want a little more of an adventure and challenge. And there is nothing wrong with that.
People don't resemble their governments too much, I always thought. It would be great to see Americans from Jonesville and Chinese from Lee Village greet through whatever gestures, by the awnings, exchange gifts/goodwill and bid farewell with a shared smile.
About the idea itself, it couldn't be that difficult, really. With a nameplate like Airstream and a pedigree of international traveling fame from WBCCI, a country eager to be on the international stage enough to host an Olympic, I thought the opportunity is mature.
Oh well. A leader like Wally is hard to come by. Looks like I missed not just the '60s but now also the '50s.
I'll exercise my 'int'l goodwill' next time at a national park gift shop, haha.
Beijing might be a bit of a stretch for most people, but what about the Winter Olympics in Vancouver during 2010. Vancouver has generally balmy weather in January/February compared to the rest of Canada - could be feasible if we could find a campground willing to take us.
Just a thought.

p.s. I totally appriciate the idea, but in case people don't care to go to China and skip this thread entirely, maybe you can get a Vancouver thread going so they can see it better?

A couple of months ago, when I went college hunting with my daughter at Syracuse, NY, I courtesy parked with a WBCCI couple in Liverpool, NY. They had been with the club for many, many years, and had been on an Airstream China caravan. So it has been done before! Not sure if this was an Airstream factory caravan or a WBCCI caravan. But I recall they had real classic trailers, shipped over from the US.

Drove through that area this summer, coming from Lilloet, and stayed at Alice Lake. Really liked the provincial park there. The roads were a mess from the construction to get things in shape for the Olympics. The pacific northwest is beatiful and worth a detour.
