We've been working with Bert Kalet and Roger Wilson, leaders of the north- and south-bound routes, ever since the announcement came that there would be no support from WBCCI. We'll be providing space in the magazine for the caravan to recruit additional members, make announcements, etc.

We've also got a few other VERY interesting ideas in the works, which I hope to be able to announce later. All I can say is, it's going to be a lot of fun to watch whether you're going on the caravan or not!

Congrats to all who are going. Wish we could join you!
WOO HOO! WAY TO GO RICH! Now there's a sponsorship everyone can embrace! Cutting edge journalism and pictorals in the quality Airstream Life magazine. Every cloud has a silver lining, every Airstream cloud that is. This is the best news. Forward thinking sponsorship from an editor and magazine that really "gets it!"

WBCCI doesn't know what it just let slip through its hands. They withheld their sponsorship for more appropriate things like micro managing rules and regulations, and the Blue Beret can continue to focus on the business of Hobo rallies, chili cookoffs, cut out coupons and stale advertising. What were they thinking?!

It's a far grander thing to have an Airstream Life sponsored caravan. Congratulations all! This promises to be the best adventure yet!

Excellent news! We would do this caravan if we could, but we can't, so I hope we can do the next best thing - which will be to enjoy daily updates from the road perhaps, with lots of pictures and occasional video (I hope I hope I hope). Got to keep up with what my friends are doing over there!

Safe travels to all you adventurers!

Actually, AM General has made/assembled all Hummers (no more H1 -- they discontinued the them in June of 06). GM owns the brand, marketing and distribution side of things.

We have a 2003 H2 and when we go for an oil change, or any maintenance we have to say it is an AM General. Otherwise they can't find any record of it! Hee, hee .

Airstream Forums Sponsorhsip?

What about Airstream Forums sponsoring the caravan? Air forum members could donate to sponsor the caravan and the caravan could post daily to a blog with pictures of the adventure. This would allow us who can't go to partake on a daily basis and indirectly take part in the fun. This could be in a sponsoring members area only accessible by a password issued through e-mail to a sponsoring member. The donation could be $10 or $20.

I commend Rich Luhr and I am proud I subscribe to his excellent publication. It is something we as Airstream owners can be proud of unlike membership in the WBCCI.

This is an opportunity for the Airstream forum members to step up where the WBCCI dare no go. This is an opportunity for the Airstream forums group to show it is the up can comming Airstream organization while the WBCCI is a dying Airstream organization (but possibly a growing SOB organization).

I believe that Airstream Life and the Airstream forums group are the future of Airstreaming.

Rich, that is great news! Thank you so much for sponsoring and for believing in something that WBCCI is not willing to care for... WBCCI is digging its own grave these days.

So, Rich we as subscribers are sort of co-sponsors now??

Keep up the great work, every single issue of AirstreamLife is a pleasure to read...

Is there a Capetown to Cairo Webpage already?

I want to thank Rich Luhr and Airstream Life for sponsoring the Caravan and further, note my support to Air Apparent's suggestion that the Airstrearm or AIR Forum provide sponsorship. Andy would have to gauge whether he thinks that members would give sufficient dollars cumulatively to make it worthwhile. I would donate $20 or a reasonable amount to be listed as an AIR sponsor of the Caravan. Maybe the Capetown to Cairo Caravan could come up with some token momento to donating members, say a post card stamped and mailed to each from both ends of the caravan.

I would make a donation to help sponsor the caravan. But if possible, a post card as a momento of the caravan would be one of my most prized Airstream treasures.

I recently posted the details of Hummer, AM General, and GM production history here: http://www.airforums.com/forum...0-post109.html

My 2005 H2 was built by AM General, but is serviced by a Hummer Dealer under terms of a GM warranty. It is a great tow vehicle and I would recommend an H2 as a tow vehicle for the Cape Town to Cairo Carvan if open desert or rugged unimproved roads are on the route. The biggest downside would be the need to carry a few extra cans of gasloline as the tank is fairly small for a vehicle this size. I don't feel that the milegae when towing is much worse than any other gasoline engined full size tow vehicle.

On the other hand, if the caravan sticks to paved highways an H2 wouldn't be necessary, although it would still be a comfotable way to travel.

That is a great idea! I already offered to 2Air that the forums would help sponsor the caravan. I offered to help them attract sponsors by allowing them to use the forums as a marketing mechanism. I think this is the perfect opportunity to get a satellite data sponsor and post photos and blog entires here on the forums!

As I said, I will give you all free hosting for your website too (just like all the WBCCI chapters whos sites AIR hosts). We will have blogging software setup here on the forums later this year as well as video upload and editing features. That's right, you will be able to upload videos, photos, music, etc and edit them right here on the forums! I can't think of a better way to be connected to this trip then a blog here with videos uploaded from the road. The members will love it!!!

We can help you big time with this project (I mean we have already been helping since the beginging with the free forum hosting). So this is a call to the organizers of the CCCC get in touch with me about working with the forums.

I can't think of a better place to promote the caravan then here on AIR!

I heard rumors about National Geographic being a magazine sponsor, does this mean they are out?

hi andyr and other caravan supporters

thanks for posting on the ideas and endorsements...

we already appreciate your efforts andy and the server space provided.

i didn't want to mention the offer publicly until you did; now i can.

i'm in contact with the actual caravan planners to discuss this and

how best you utilize the forums connection, visibility and how to enhance corporate connections via the forum, and so on.

can't wait to try the blog, video and other new features.

also the monetary offers are awesome, i'm not sure how we'd use or account 4 them yet.

perhaps everyone renewing their upgraded/africa sponsor accounts here,

could get a special decal or have access to the 'africa cam' when its operational...

along with post cards and other goodies...

technology moves so fast that by 2009 we may be using a transporter for the caravan!

cheers
2air'

oh and the national geographic connection is still under develpment. no news to report yet.

Great news about the sponsorship!

On a related note, I thought National Geographic was already sponsoring this event or did I miss something? The more sponsors the better!
