The newest issue of Airstream Life, which we received over the weekend, has an article entitled "10 Questions for the Organizer of Capetown to Cairo 2009 Pete Daniels and Bert Kalet".

Well.....we're going! We've purchased an Argosy. You've even seen it at the BB rally.....Butch and Beth's 22' 1977. We've sent in our deposit and are on the list to go! Do you want to co-own this trailer with me and you can take it the other way!
i'm still digesting that the trip can happen...and co-owning would be neat!
have you communicated with burt and dot? any info on how many folks are on the list?
pm me if off list is better...
what a cool tirp...

COOL! This trip looks like the trip of a lifetime - I hope it gets off the ground. I would love to go - but can't so... who ever goes better figure out how to post via cell phone or satellite phone - we are going to want road news and pictures!

I've sent Bert & Dot several emails and have received prompt relpys to my ?'s. The last I've heard is that 13 trailers have been purchased and as many deposits sent in. Don't think too long about it.....as the list will be filled quickly now that the Blue Beret coupons are out to the WB'ers! You can pull out by July 1, 2007 without any loss of funds. You can get on the Newsletter list by emailing Vivian Schultz at schultzteched@ida.net . You can get back issues in Word format attached to an email.
The attached pic is an enlargment of my avatar. The trailer is in great condition.....Butch did a good job of updating everything (including Darol's pex tubing in all the plumbing). We've ordered some window rock guards for the front, and we're changing out the carpet with some remnants we have from our house.
Now that we're owner's of two trailers it feels weird knowing that this one will be sold in Africa! I guess we better not fall in love with it. We'll be taking it to the coast to try things out soon.
Jim, I'm so jealous, I wish I could go! That trailer was really neat, the girls enjoyed playing in there too. Butch did a fantastic job on it. I think the only thing I might suggest is an awning to help beat the heat, and maybe shipping your genset for the AC (actually, to save on shipping, using a cheaper Coleman or a Honda "replica" and just leave it there). The white exterior should help in the desert.
Pairing with 2air would be cool... we could get daily reports from both of you!
Marc,
Evidently the cost of shipping with an AC is prohibitive and Bert is recommending everyone remove their AC's......luckily this trailer has no AC.
As to the awning, it's another $1600, but would probably be worth the investment.
A co-owner of a trailer would be going the other direction...so would not be together. 2air would have to buy his own AS or co-own another going north.... then we would be able to caravan together.
Hey Jim - it doesn't have to be a Zip Dee - Carefree makes arms that fit the Argy, I think all together it's about 700 - don't splurge for fabric, you want cheap. The awning made a HUGE difference in the heat in Eastern WA.
No AC... some thoughts - wet towels hung over the windows (covering the screens) while they're open... cheap man's swamp cooler.
2air - wow, can I buy a copy off of you? PM me....
Again - I can't wait to live this through your eyes. So exciting!
