New whip into old plug for running lights

Help I'm in over my head. I have a 1971 safari. The wiring whip that plugs into the airstream is super beat up and it's time to replace it. So i went and bought a new standard 6' whip w a 7 blade round that goes into my truck. My plan was and I think is to remove the old plug from the whip that goes into the trailer and attach it to the new one. I labeled the plug carefully so that I could put the new wires to match the old wiring configuration. it's all together now but it's doesn't match what the label inside the airstream plug said. The lights worked fine before. Am I in any danger to go ahead and plug it in? I also double checked the old 7 blade and it is wired the same as the new plug. Is it true what I've read that AS didnt or doesn't follow the way the plug is standardly supposed to be wired in the plug that attaches to the trailer. Thanks

Airstream did not follow standard wiring protocol on trailer end, if you wired new plug on tr. end exact. as old plug everything should work ok.
