Has anyone ever shortened a A/S awning tube

I have access to a 17 foot wide awning, but my trailer needs 13 foot, can I cut the tube the awning roll up on down 4'? What is inside that tube?

I've cut down a Carefree awning with no trouble at all.

What brand of awning are you dealing with?

I needed a 12.5 ft roller for my pool cover, friend had an old awning reel, cut it down, only problem was making sure a 90 degree cut was even so I used a marker all the way around and hacksawed around rather than straight thru keeping to the line. Measured twice for single cut, final size increases .25 by the insert. 20 yrs later still using it. It didn't have a spring in the center as some do.
