It's insurance.

Better have it and not need it than needing it and not having it.

But as the padlock goes through the cross member too, the propane box won't be able to turn.

This has worked so far for me picked up the hitch lock at Harbor Freight, change the pin to a stainless steel bolt (Harder to cut through then steel) also added 2 rod collars with Alan set screws below the wing nut both to space wing-nut up to clear above gas regulator and to slow them down, needing an allen wrench to get the 2 rod collars off.

You could just drill a hole through the battery box lid and the box lip and use a padlock or use tamper resistant bolts on both sides.

Not theft proof but would be a deterrent.

The only reason I can figure Airstream placed a lock on the outside shower is to remind owners to require others to ask permission to use it....since the lock is securing a plastic cover!

Same thing with the Sport batt-box (but FCs and up/grades are certainly different..... if anyone breaks into the expensive metal batt-boxes....it'll be.. expensive. It's why insurance is sold.

The best reason to lock things up is to remind relatively honest people to remain honest and not provide temptation. I drilled a hole thru the bracket and the wing-nut and use a Ruger bicycle lock (which Ruger intended to lock the action open...) thereby rendering the propane tanks difficult to steal and reminding the thief a mini 14 is another good reason to move-on.

Sports also came with a cheap, plastic propane cover and I've thought of tossing it and either replacing it with an expensive metal cover...or simply allowing the tanks to sit in view.... but that encourages theft and exposes the tanks, regulator, hoses, etc. to road-blasting debris. Soo...any cover is helpful,...even a cheap one.... IMO.

To me, that's a good and elegant solution. Why pay $80 for a piece of sheet steel that does the same thing?

After much research....I came up with the following security upgrades:

For my Airstream 16' Sport: These are what I feel are the simplest, most secure, most cost effective approach to secure propane tanks (Master Lock 175DLH Set-Your-Own Combination Lock, 2-1/4-Inch Shackle, 2-Inch Body), batteries (B & D RV Battery Lock), and the Airstream hitch receiver itself (Atwood 89005). See photos.

Simple cheap propane tank lock

I used 3 links from an Ace Hardware chain and a Master combination lock to create a simple lock for my new aluminum propane tanks. See the accompanying photo.

Raising this topic from the dead as I just heard about some propane tank thefts along with catalytic converters at a storage yard. Decided to make sure my tank cover and tanks were secured as well.

Like the posts show at #17 and #27, a big enough Master lock (or other brand) will lock down the wing and keep it from turning so the tanks and the tank cover can’t be stolen. Velcro the lock tightly to the tank crossbar as well so it can’t move, spark, etc.

The nut on the top is soldered to the wing also.

Aluminum tanks are not available anywhere last time I looked (about a month ago). If you know where 30lb aluminum tanks can be found, please send me a private message :-)

Not sure where you're looking, but my local propane dealer was able to order aluminum tanks last I asked. I also see them listed as in stock on a few online stores.

I purchased one of these 2 years ago and works great. It’s expensive, though easy to manage.

Yeah, I just got that. Before I got a much cheaper lock before realizing it wouldn’t work. My only concern is that it barely threads the top of the post, and there isn’t much thread at the bottom to be able to move it up further. I think I need to replace the post. I can’t current use the washer they say to use.

If you lock the wing the way that I did (along with the other posts), they can't get the aluminum cover off (easily) as well.

You don't need to spend +/- $100 for the Fortress lock (which looks to be a good product) or worry about the thread length available for it if you just use a large lock as shown. The large lock (w/ correct shackle size) is also way cheaper.

Oh I agree 100%. I wish I’d read this forum before I bought that lock. If I can find the original packaging, I’m going to try to return it.

This is hilarious to me, because this thread and our posts are so old that we don't even own our 27FB trailer anymore. BTW, never lost a tank or an aluminum cover in seven years. Now we're in an AI with the tank built into the van.

Really? Please PM me the contact information for your propane dealer and the websites. I would really appreciate it.
