Sounds like a fun project, at the very least.
How will you access the interior--a hatch from the top?
How will you eliminate waste water and human waste?
Are you planning on running propane underground?
How will it be powered?
How will you ventilate it during the 99.99% of the time that we are not at code orange? Mildew is going to be a real problem without some sort of forced ventilation.

Interesting concept, please keep us posted on your progress.

This may sound crazy, But why not just tow the thing to someplace far, far away, where nobody in their right mind, or otherwise would ever bomb in the first place?

I would rather drive out to a remote part of the country then hunker down in my own grave, just the opinion of an ex-military vet who has participated in combat situations.

If you are serious about a shelter - sell the airstream and build a proper one - all your gonna do is eat the aluminum and steel structure of the Airstream via electrolysis\corrosion....

Still - if you do this will be exciting to see how you overcome some of these issues - just remember condensation (particually inside the Airstream) and ventilation are your friends...

I am reminded of a quote attributed to Gen George C Patton that "fixed fortifications are monuments to man's stupidity". I think you'd be better served by having a mobile survival-shack rather than a fixed location.

Besides, no one will bother bombing anyplace in South Carolina... unless they are a UGA or UF fan.

along with some of the more obvious problems/concerns - you didn't mention anything about intenal structural supports.

i imagine the weight of the sandbags against the top and sides of the AS would crush it like a shiny egg.

If it was entirely bitumen-coated, then a steel reinforced concrete wall was built against it, taking its shape, 12" thick, then 3 or 4 feet of concrete (or compressed dirt with a concrete cap) with vents at either end (4" steel pipe with a U at the top) and a method of removing water from the belly, draining the tanks, etc (I'm assuming the tanks would be above-deck and luggable). A concrete step entrance to the door with a small thick steel hatch, NOT lockable from the outside or someone could just padlock you in...

Given a nuclear attack, it's very survivable and just a few weeks below ground puts you in a very good position. After just the first week or two you'd be able to open the doors and get some good ventilation going.

I'd personally run some heavy wire to the surface, then if it was need, take the 500W+ of solar and go lay it out when radiation fell to safe levels for very short term exposure.

It could be quite comfortable - if you think a thermonuclear war is a realistic possibility. Given the main triggers of wars are disputes over resources, or economic hardship, in a few years this could be viewed as either a folly, or extreme foresight.

I have traditional bunker designs if anyone would like copies: I have built a couple and decommissioned many.

Truly, ventilation/heat is the main issue, depending on how many people are sheltering.

This is undoubtedly the stupidest idea I ever heard of. If you have to make a bomb shelter an Airstream is the worst thing you could make it out of. Every part, every feature is the opposite of what you want for this purpose.

You would be way farther ahead to sell the trailer and use the money to build a better shelter. If you want something to build to, a steel shipping container is 10 times stronger, has more room inside, and costs one fifth as much.

I know how this is going to end up. Years ago there was a repair garage that was located on the side of a hill. At the back, beside the garage there was an old truck body that was used for storage. Eventually they brought in dump truck after dump truck of dirt and filled in the area beside the garage, to make a parking lot. The trailer was completely buried with the back door exposed. It slowly rotted away and eventually collapsed about 30 years after being buried. Of course this was a type of commercial truck body that was much stronger than an Airstream, and being made of steel, more resistant to corrosion. Also nobody was dropping bombs on it. O yeah it was in a well drained area and covered with gravel so there was no problem with water.

I predict your Airstream shelter is going to be a disappointment no matter how much you spend on it.

I think this whole thing is a hoax, we haven't heard one word from the original poster on any more of his plans. He is just sitting back there giggling over all the responses...
I think I am going to turn my Airstream into a time machine, what do you all think of that idea?
