I exercised my shadtree mechanic muscles today by swapping out the old steel differential cover on my Titan for a new finned aluminum cover from PML that will add a quart of gear fluid capacity. Of course, I'll upgrade to the Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil. My knuckles are officially pre-skinned.

I don't know anything about the folks who run the Port in Baltimore. Based on my conversation with my father, I think Remco's "new" Chevy is probably held together with duct tape and baling wire. Fortunately, it sounds like Remco is a much better mechanic than me so if we can get this beast over the "pond," I'm sure he'll have it running like a top before long.

As I recall, the father determined that tearing the door off was "operator error." As the driver, I was held fully responsible. In Montana, "fully responsible" usually means getting the knocked in the dust a few times. Of course, my brother could have hurt himself laughing. I don't remember.

All in all, folks, it's a "karma" thing. In a few years, my wife and I plan to take some early retirement. Our goal: 49 states, 12 months, one (vintage) trailer. I imagine somewhere along the line, I'll need help and maybe some kind soul will take pity on me. Well, even if they don't, it would be nice if they didn't laugh at me like my charming little brother.

Update:

Remco is using a company called HTI USA of New Jersey to handle the shipping. I called at 10 a.m. to speak with Vanessa (who is handling Remco's issue). I was told Vanessa is not in the office, "call back later." I called at 12:15 p.m., no one answers the phone. I called at 1:15 p.m. After about eight or nine rings, someone answers the phone. I ask for Vanessa. There's a pause for about half a minute and a person picks up. "Vanessa can't take your call right now, call back in a few minutes."

I don't want to seem like a "crabby appleton" here, but maybe the folks at HTI might want to think about the technology of "taking a message."

The Port is only open from 8 to 11:45 and 1 to 3:30 Monday through Friday. An appointment is required. That is, of course, if one can get an appointment.

I'm not planning on shipping anything overseas any time soon, but as of this moment, I would not be enthusiastic about using HTI as the shipping firm.

I called at at 2:30 p.m. Vanessa is now out of the office. While it took a bit of time, I finally convinced the person answering the phone (who did not pick up until the 8th ring) that she should leave a message with my name and number so Vanessa can call me. Call it a hunch, but I'm guessing I won't get a return call today.

Indeed the service of ATI USA Inc has gone bad really bad.
A couple of day's ago I called and was asked to hold the line.
I was on hold for 45 minutes.
For me it will most likely the last time I used this compagny.

It's pushing 5 p.m. and Vanessa did not call. Of course, since I wanted to make an appointment to visit the Port tomorrow, this probably sets everything back a day.

Just two observations:

1. Manure flows downstream
2. Vanessa probably has a supervisor

;-)

Best of luck!

I called at 9:45 a.m. I asked for Vaness. The person who answered the phone asked who was calling. I gave her my name. I am now at the five minute mark for "on hold." (This is a long distance call).

We're at ten minutes. I'll give them 15 before I disconnect and call again.

I went a bit beyond 15 because I was trying to finish a letter while listening to the "on hold" music. So, I hung up and called back. I asked for Vanessa and if she wasn't available, then the office manager or supervisor. In a shocking turn of events, I'm on hold again.

So, after about 10 minutes, the mysterious Vanessa actually picked up the phone. She explained that she would need me to send all of my information (despite the fact that I had already emailed her all of my contact information). She explained that she would need to contact the shipping company and then they would let me know when I could inspect the truck. So, while my patience is getting a bit thin, I sent an email with all of the information and now I'll wait to see what, if anything, Vanessa sends back.
