Rental Cars & Towing ?

Do any of the National rental car companys allow you to use them as a tow vehicle? They would obviously need to be equipped.

Has anyone rented a TV and had good/bad experience?

It would be hard to imagine anything working short of a pickup truck or something with a standard (not optional) 2" receiver. Newer pickups have the 7-pin plugin but I couldn't imagine it would be easy to equip a rental with a brake controller. And the TV's and an Airstream's pin pattern are different and you'd have to custom wire a replacment plug to the Airstream umbilical.

Years ago I rented a U-Haul and towed a simple trailer with the 4-pin plug -- don't think they'd come with anything like the 2 5/16" ball Airstreams had after the late '60s.

Driving by the large local RV dealer I always see a lot of for sale pickups & SUVs ('gently aged' tow vehicles). Don't know if they'd talk to you about your plan.

Typically rental companies don't allow towing. More than once we have been caught short on a project and needed a tow vehicle to get one of the smaller trailers back to the office. We usually get a Uhaul. But they don't come setup with controllers or receivers. Ryder trucks MAY come with receivers.

Seen it on the highway, rental truck towing trailer, may or may not be in the lease agreement. Liability insurance would be the biggest hangup.
When I checked towing from Ohio to FL a few years ago, only Georgia had limits and brake requirements at the time.

Last July I rented an F350 from Enterprise to drive to Florida to tow my airstream home to Chicago. They knew exactly what I was doing with it. Only thing I needed was business insurance, (they did not care about my car insurance at all).

It cost me under 400 dollars, and took 4 days and the folks at enterprise were really great to deal with. I did have to drive about an hour and a half from my house to the specific Enterprise store that deals with this sort of rental.
