okay here it is.... i have found my first airstream.... problem....its from the states and im here in canada and it is here too. a guy is selling it and i want it. the only problem is he pulled it out of the bushes on his property and has no papers. -the last time it was on the road was 28 years ago and we cant track owners so i cant insure it. the floor is rotten but with the help of your forums i wanted to tackle it. the outside is not pitted or anything!!! i wanted to try to insure it as a "u-build" but the insurance company says i cant. is there any loopholes or wrecks i can get vins from or anything? please help.....
matt
There are some service companies that specialize in securing titles for vehicles with unknown owners. These services can be found in Hemmings Motor News (hmn.com). I don't know if they work with trailers, though. Also, you have the extra delema of beeing in Canada. Your provincial government may have some provisions for this type of circumstance. I would check with them.

yes there are vins. but they need the last 3 digits (and i know this sounds crazy) of the last owner of the trailer to find track it. trust me i thought it was dumb too.i found the original owners info on the closet door but they said thats no help. thanks for that web site but it doesnt look like they do trailers. this airstream looks in great shape on the outside. inside is a gut job. but that way i can make it the way i want it. and he wants 400 dollars canadian!!!!
we have tried that but they say it will still have factory manufactured parts and cannot be considered u-built. could i find someone with a wrecked one and get vins? (by the way thanks for all the help)
Why the rush to insure it? It is covered for liability when hooked to your truck. Your first problem is to get papers to cross the border. I had one that I first got a replacement registration in New York, then crossed into Ontario and registered it there.
You will need papers to get a registration in Canada, as you need a form 1 from customs and they need to know who it came from.
Welcome Wannabeowner. Chock up another BC'er to the Forums.
There's a fellow named Mark Zolner (?sp?) who specializes in helping folks with vintage cars get registration. I'm tracking down his contact info and will forward once I have it. I don't know if he does trailers but it's well worth asking him and if nothing else he may be able/willing to make other suggestions. You have a similar problem to a lot of folks who find an old car in a barn or field and need to get registration and this is the area he plays in.
