I appreciate it and wish that trailer belonged to me. Was a really fun project. - David Winick
I too own a 1950, hoping to get to about 1/4 of your efforts. I would be proud if so. What if anythng did yo do to the frame? I found the two steel beams supporting the axle to be too rusted. I thought to add water holding capacities I needed more rigidity, more frame. If so, could you post a picture of the frame pre shell being re-installed?

David,

Did you replace the axle? If so, with what? If you don't mind answering. There are few if any other pipe frame restores on the forum. I am really interested in what others have done, more so to validate my decisions, hoping they were the correct ones.

Hi
In answer to both of these questions, the pipe frame chassis of this Flying Cloud was discarded and a new frame was installed at the factory service center in Jackson Center. The 4" pipe coming through the back end is to give it the appearance of being a pipe frame, when in reality it is a modified new chassis. The axle is also new and I believe it is a Dexter. These modifications were done before I began work on the interior.

Another flying cloud on Craigs List at http://eugene.craigslist.org/rvs/724480438.html. It is in Oregon and the quote from the listing is:

Quote:
Info:
• This is a 1962 Airstream, 22 feet long, last registered in 1997 and the vehicle identification number (VIN) is 22D880660.
• (VIN) 22D880660 - decoded this would be:
o 1962 Flying Cloud 22'
o Double bed model
o Made in California and it was the 30th 22 foot model made in 1962 of the 245 made within the year.
o California | 22 D SS 0630 to 22 D SS 0875 (the 88s in the VIN from the state were really SS originally).
• No rust to speak of, rivets are tight, glass & screen in tact, no leaks (currently used as storage.
• This trailer is already gutted and ready to be your summer project!
