Axles welded or bolted on?

I am replacing my axle on my 1962 Safari.

The axle I had was welded on. Is this common for this vintage? I thought they were typically bolted.

The old one was cut off today after a lot of work from the guys at my shop--Camper Reparadise in Salt Lake City.

Jim,

The first few years the axles were welded on then later they were bolted on.

Thanks. This made replacing it a bit more labor intensive!

Yes it does on the early ones, especially when you are not prepared.

it's happening

The old axle has been removed, and the new one is on.

The photo of the new axle below was just before the new one was welded to the frame. The guys at my shop said it would be too hard to modify the frame to make it so we could bolt on the new axle.

understanding axles

I just wrote a new post on my blog, as I try to better understand axles (and why I just replaced mine!). I thought others might find it useful, though there is plenty of other axle information on here!

Work in progress

Photos below show:
  • Axle recently welded on
  • Repainting frame around it (other side vs. image 1)
  • Before putting the belly pan back on
  • All buttoned up again

Working being done by the craftsmen at Camper Reparadise, Salt Lake City.

Want to learn more about axles? Here's a repost of the link to my recent blog post: http://www.utahredrock.com/2017/06/n...ic-manner.html
