On the upside I suppose the snow adds some extra insulation.

Fortunately the studio has a huge woodburning stove and a corresponding wood pile. I put about 30 big pieces in the studio fire each day, they are about 24-30 inches long. I take one and cut it in half on the bandsaw, chop it up and keep my space warm for the day. I let the stove go out overnight (I stay warm under the comforters down to about 0 - beyond that and I either need to stoke the stove or plug in a little space heater). Then I clean out the stove around noon and start it up again to use the space as a secondary studio... I can keep it as hot as I want in there, that stove puts out some serious heat.

So far things have been good travelling, I guess about 6000 miles? The solar/battery system is great - I plug in every once in a while to really charge the batteries, but even here the panel keeps up with my needs (the days are getting longer now). I love watching the amps flow in during the day on my meter and then that same meter reminds me to shut offf the radio when I am not listening...

No problems with the wood walls structurally. The rivets condense water and grow little ice flowers though...

Water system needs heat tape - or some other system using my water heater to circulate through the pipes? I'm leaning towards heat tape as I think I will almost always have access to a plug if I am north in the winter. My plan is to spend more time south!

I still have condensation on the bottom of the bed when it is really cold, even with the holes. I need to raise the mattress on some kind of structure like a rigid version of a furnace filter - this would allow air to get to all parts of the bottom of the bed. Or, I might try putting a piece of foam insulation on the bottom and see if that keeps it from getting warm down there...

I would probably put something tougher in for the floor if I did it over... I like the wood in Theresa's flying cloud, I think it could be milled pretty thin to save on weight. I like the way a beat up wood floor looks, but a beat up cork floor just looks kind of beat up. And I tend to beat it up since it is a studio.

Carlos
Carlos,

It could be that something like this product that I stumble across in a West Marnine catalog might help with the ventilation under the bed. It seems to be a little bit expensive but it could be just what you need.

May Showers

I finished up the shower with a few valves and fittings from the hardware store, through the wall, a hand held sprayer high up in the corner...

Land Capacity Record

Parties get good when you have 1 person per foot of length.

does everyone eventually end up hanging out in the kitchen? when we have a party, you'd think we didn't have any other rooms in the house.

I think that's why airstreams are good for parties - it's like the entire 'stream is the kitchen at a house party, you get crammed in with people you don't know. People gravitate towards that kind of diminished personal space...

Icebox

I've been at my parent's home trying to finish off my airstream - for the last couple days I've been working on a super-insulated icebox. I used some information from these links:

http://www.practical-sailor.com/news.../896icebox.pdf

http://www.boatelectric.com/Nova%20B...00-F%20Kit.htm

Later, I may add one of these, expensive, but very efficient, I think I could run it on my solar panel.
