Why are there ads for phones?

Turned on the computer this morning, clicked on my favorite site and what do I see, tree posts about cell phones for sale and one for sneakers, why? If you are going to post this stuff put it in the classifieds.

Those are spam ads. There are folks all over the world who are paid to join forums like ours and post spam ads... when the forums aren't moderated or at least well moderated, many of them get left up. They must be at least somewhat effective, or there wouldn't be so much effort expended to post them. They used to be placed by spambots, but with the newer signup technology, those don't work as well, so they actually have people doing it.

I'd guess that we delete and ban, on average, three to five new posters and new accounts per day that are spam posts. There are usually enough Moderators online at any given moment that we catch them almost immediately; but occasionally (as in this case) apparently they were up for some period of time before we catch them.

Richard is our spam killer extraordinaire followed closely by Bob... they catch probably 95% of them before the rest of us in the back room even know they were posted!

So... sorry you had to see those, but thanks for letting us know they've been posted!

Roger

The mod up earliest tends to catch the overnights from the far side of the world. I may have slipped to 4th place, Roger. silverleeper and Kevin245 are prolly moving up on the outside rail.

Think we could get a huge discount if our members order a whole ocean-going container full of phones? Trouble with scammers, they'd probably all be Fisher-Price...

Nothing makes my evening like tuning in for one last check of the forum and catching a spammer! They spent all the time to sign up and post their spam, and *click-click* and they're GONE - bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

I was thinking maybe Airstream was staring to market phones and sneakers, testing the waters for a new market.

I think that'd be a huge mistake. The sneakers would be unbalanced running gear, and the aluminum phone cases would undoubtedly have filiform corrosion problems right out of the box.
