Fyrzowt, go to your profile page, then the tab "About Me" and at the bottom of all the things you can change is one for supporting members to eliminate the classified thing. At least that's how I interpret it.
I don't think any of it is an "underhanded trick" nor do I think Howie said that either. I do think it's a mistake. If I didn't think mistakes couldn't be changed I'd not bother ranting, explaining, or whatever.
...I've figured it out, I think. If you are a "supporting member" (i.e., pay to play) you don't have to have the annoying sparkly classifieds thing—it's an option.
This further annoys me. First of all, without all the members, this Forum wouldn't exist. All members should be equal.
...
Gene, you're a valued member, but I can't agree with you on this one. Yes, all members are valued, but the forum wouldn't exist without some method of support, whether donations, advertising, or some other method. Some other method might be to go back to something like the old karma system and give free supporting memberships to the top 3% of the active posters, judged by the quality of their posts, not the frequency (that's sorta how the old karma system worked, sorta). What's an "active" poster--once a week, once a month? I don't know.
There may be other ideas out there that would provide another routes to favored status. Gee, what about being a moderator--is that in the same category? This is definitely a difficult issue.
Supportingm members "support" by making small payments, payments that are many times repaid by the value received from forum postings and other services.
Those members who aren't in the supporting member category provide "support" by allowing themselves to be subject to additional advertising--sorry, nothing is free, but this comes close to it. But est you think I missed one of your points, I agree that all members support the forums by posting their ideas, observations, and comments--it's just that that is only half of the success equation for the forums.
Therefore, I my judgment is that we all "support" the forums. If the advertising or other features annoy you, I think you have the right to say so, and you did. But you also have the option to become a supporting member--your choice. I know for some members economics might be an issue, but the options are open to everyone.
This forum is so important to me that I made my initial donation before I knew there were any benefits from doing so. I continue to feel that way. I hope others do, too.
I also appreciate Andy's open-door policy that lets us vent--I've taken advantage of that several times myself.

I found it, but it doesn't seem to work for me either. (I do like the new "multi-quote" thing though.

I am still working on making that option live. It will work soon, I had to ask a developer about some template conditional logic.
Thanks for the input on some of the other topics covered. I will take the info/thoughts into consideration when evaluating some future changes. Also, please note the corner page peel no longer flashes.
Mac users, I will be able to do some testing next week when I am back in Dallas and have my Mac around (typically I am a Windows person). To make sure I understand, you are saying that link in the top right do not work unless you activate the page peel. Once the page peel has folded down and then gone back to the smaller state the links work? I see ArtStream said he was using Firefox 2.0 are the other using this or Opera?

As far as I can tell, as a Windows operating system and Fire Fox user, this option
If you have upgraded your account (more details) and do not want to show the Supporting Member enhancments (text below your avatar, gold rivet next to your username) click the box below.
does nothing. I tried it. It did not remove the (text below your avatat, gold rivets next to your username).
Also the option click the box below. Remove the Page Peel from the upper right corner.
I have had similar problem, <snip> while typing a Reply. If I attempt to move the cursor back several words in my typing, to correct something, the cursor will not set that that point. If I move further back in the post the cursor will take and I can then move it forward to the point I want to correct.
I've had the same problem. That and the freeze up until I click the flashy ad thingie ~

I already tried this, to no avail:

Andy: I'm using Mac OS 10.4.11, Firefox 2.0.0.4... That's correct, but it seems to come and go...I haven't been able to duplicate it today. Weird.

Andy, Let me get this straight—the classified sparkly thing no longer sparkles, flashes, or otherwise annoys?! You have been listening (actually, reading)! I haven't read your post wrong?
And, in case I have been misread or I miswrote, I don't object to advertising, I do object to in-your-face advertising. Over the years I have developed the ability to mostly ignore all other advertising unless I'm looking for something specific, so most of it doesn't bother me. I know the "suggested donation" isn't much, but ever since I bought our Safari, I have been shoveling money out and I'm getting tired of it (plus cheapness runs in my family). So far as the terminology, "supporting" implies there are nonsupporting members—I don't have any solution in particular. I do believe the term is unfortunate.
A nonprofit organization in which I am active debates about whether to acknowledge major donors in our newspaper—same issue. People should be acknowledged for whatever contributions they make, but should it be public? I like more rivets, and that is the same question, though I could make 500 idiotic posts (only 22 more on the idiot meter!) and get to be a "master". What feeds the ego? Orange names? Diamond shaped rivets? A bumper sticker?
I went back over all the links on 2air's post #171 and found these numbers he calculated from a year ago:
"zero posts......13,150 members
one post..........2,400 members
two posts.........1,100 members
three posts.........700 members
four posts...........450 members
five posts...........350 members
6-10 posts..........900 membersso
"that's 19,000 members with 10 or fewer posts
"11-50 posts............1,350 members
51-100 posts.............350 members
101-250 posts............250 members
251-500 posts............100 members
>than 500 posts.........170 members
also there are 1000s who have not logged in for 2 years or more..."
Why did they drop out? Has anyone ever checked it out—e-mailed them, called them, etc.?
Really? I can turn it off? How??? Do tell ~ or point me to where it says how.
The code to hide the ad (triggered by that check box) is not in place yet. I will get it added ASAP. I am just waiting for a programmer to get me some code I need to make it work. I'll post an update about this as soon as it's done.

That's probably why the Page Peel was invented (because other forms have become overlooked). I suspect Page Peels will also become less effective with time also. It actually takes up very little screen space and only expands if you click on it. It's designed to be less invasive and take up less screen real estate while still providing an advertiser space to deliver a message.

Sorry, I don't want to go back to this old debate. There was no clear winner then and probably wouldn't be now if we started the debate again. I am willing to listen to suggestions but please do this via PM. I really don't think it's good for the community to get caught up on semantics of things like this.

We have some members who have left as the community grew larger (they liked the smaller size it used to be), we have had many members who have sold their Airstreams and moved onto SOBs. I don't think many left because they felt left out over the Supporting Member label given to those that have upgraded though.
