I noticed new icons on the bottom line of every post. I am sure they came in with the recent upgrade. Does anyone know what they do?

Those little icons allow members to post "social bookmarks" about a topic that they are reading about here on the forums.

These sites include Digg, Furl, Del.icio.us & Technorati. You can read more about social bookmarking at Wikipedia here:
Social bookmarking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What happens is people who are members of these other sites can bookmark pages they link and they add info about the pages. These pages are then shared in their listings and can lead to more traffic for us and more links back (which will give us better search engine ranking).

We are going to test these tools for a while and see if they are useful. Then we can evaluate if we want to keep them or not...

If any other have info about these sites (especially if you use them) please post it hear. We would love to hear from you...

i don't like these tags at all. they appear below everyone's signature line and it's just more crap that appears on the page. plus i don't like the dots appearing below my name when i don't care to have anything to do with them. i understand the intent and appreciate the effort, but this isn't the way. i vote to have them removed or put somewhere else.

Could you be a bit more specific about how you feel about these little icons?

We voted on using those "dots" they are actually rivets...years ago and they denote how many posts you have made here. As contributors to this community you should be proud of how much you have added to help the knowledge base.

If you want to rid yourself of those "dots" go to your user profile and enter a custom user title. Pick a name, plug it in, no more dots!

Can we substitute the rivets with christmas trees while we are in the holiday season?

i'm fine with the rivets and i agree, they are something you should be proud of. i was referring to the 4 squares that appear below the signature line at each post. am i the only one besides richard that has noticed them.

i shouldn't have called the squares "dots", probably first grade geometry lesson.

i like my rivets

You mean these?

If so, that's what the thread here is about. If not, maybe we have an issue that needs to be taken care of, as that is all I see below your signature line.

I don't know enough yet about the icons to say if I'll use them or not. They are not in my way, nor do they bother me. They seem to be fairly unobtrusive, they are just new and therefore have attracted attention. I suggest putting up with them for a month or two, or until you decide if they're useful or not.
If this is something that has an overall benefit to the forums, let's give them a chance and not flame out.
Dave

As long as the link buttons do not slow down the page load or increase spam, I can live with them. Kind of a splash of color.

I am with Bob on the "permalink" thing... Sounds scary~~~~~~~

The "permalink" is from my understanding to allow linking to blog entries? However it is not enabled at the moment.

We took the permalink link down as they are only used for bloggers to link to specific posts. They can get the permalink from the link that is on the post number anyway.

As for the other little square icons we will be able to run some searches in a few months to see if they are being used. We can also look at our web logs to see if we are getting any traffic back from those sites. So we have a pretty quantitative way to measure the success of the features. So please bear with us while we test them out.

Andy,
Any plans to add others in addions to the four you have now?
I would like to suggest Yahoo's MyWeb.

I wonder if these new icons have anything to do with the forums loading really slow lately? Seems it takes forever for them to open from links in the e-mail notifications for the past few days. Maybe a week or less. It also takes forever for a post to actually post.
