This may be just stupid terminology stuff. But I have always thought of a "batwing" as the Winegard Sensar antenna all of which have to be cranked up. the Sensar comes with choice of amplified or unamplified heads. Additionally Winegard makes amplified or unamplified wall plates and other options for switchplates. Winegard also makes a "Wingman" add on which is supposed to better pick up on UHF (or is it VHF?) signals. The higher station numbers anyway. The Sensar/ "Batwing" is also a directional antenna, which Winegard at least told me in the day, does a better job of pulling in signals than a fixed boomerang type. That may have been more true in the old analog day than digital, but I'm not sure.

Some good stuff on this post....my latest encounter....Requested to talk with supervisor re problems I having with Jack via phone call. Supervisor called me back, had a very informative chat, and said company would send me a new antenna. He asked me to try antenna on another TV and I said I would do and would advise. Ya see, stepping up another notch to supervisor, and treating customer service reps with respect, works wonders. Will let ya know results.

RF is RF, there's no difference in antennas for a particular RF band between analog and digital (HDTV).

That is in agreement with the Federal Communications Commission fact sheets:
Antennas and Digital Television | FCC.gov

For those who don't follow links, here's a pertinent extract from the fact sheet:
Quote:
If your television received good quality reception on analog channels 2-51 with a broadcast antenna, it should be able to receive digital television (DTV) signals, including high definition television (HDTV) signals, with the same antenna. You do not need to purchase a "DTV antenna" or an “HDTV antenna” to receive DTV or HDTV signals; however, your antenna must be able to receive both VHF and UHF signals

Only problem with the fcc statement is that they don't take into account the all or none of reception and picture breakup or freezing without a good signal.
Last night was a good example, perfect HD picture when 3 bars of signal, plane overhead Zero, fade in and out due to atmospherics no picture or sound. With analog it would have been good then maybe fair but not total loss.
Also distance upper channels will travel is limited more than vhf, uhf never was a good choice for weak signal areas. Most CG's I go to are not in the city, however last night at Silver Springs State Park almost in Ocala couldn't get local without precise direction on antenna, with amplifier I could get Orlando and G'ville but very touchy about missing by .5 degrees.

Any good omnidirectional antennas out there?
