Run off the road - TALK ME DOWN

So I contributed to that thread... thinking the whole time, I SHOULD GET A DASH CAM. (Incredibly gross and obscene expletive deleted!)

Driving back to my winter abode at Travelers Rest & Resort, on Johnston Road, by the ancient diesel tank... and over the rise comes a Ford F-550 dually tow truck at high speed - with tow mirrors extended. I quickly go to the edge of the pavement and think I am clear, but we whack each other's drivers side mirrors. Of course both mirrors are toast.

The other driver blamed me. I know I jerked hard right just based on his size and speed, just not enough to roll the.mother truck... he claimed I jerked into his lane. He called highway patrol and his boss and tried to bully me into admitting fault.

Then I asked, "well I suppose you have a dash cam, right?" And he responded, "no, do you?" ACK! ACK! ACK!... oh why didn't God give me a poker face? Why couldn't I just smile evilly?

I KNEW a trooper was on the way.... and I knew I had to maintain my credibility, so I simply said that I hoped he had one to resolve the whole thing civilly. (True actually).

In the end the trooper wrote up that it was impossible to determine which of us was at fault. Each party will be stuck with filing a claim or paying for repairs out of pocket.

Meanwhile the milk in my groceries was turning sour.

The other driver swore that his mirror would cost $800 so there was no way he'd do anything but file. When the owner showed up 20 minutes later, he said the mirror was $620... and was not amused that I already had dozens on Amazon Prime in the $200 range... he insisted his 2013 vehicle was only going to be equipped with an OEM mirror from the dealership. Just for giggles, anyone know the price for OEM, heated with turn signals? And the trooper's last words to me were, 'ma'am I can't prove who was at fault. ... northern Florida is nice, but central and southern Florida is the armpit of the planet." And he paused and pointed to.the report
... where the company did SALVAGE
... and the driver's address is a PO BOX

and their mirror will come off of a wreck

OK. now I will go and get some cheese to go with this WHINE!

Curses, Foiled Again! Paula

Everybody wanna go to heaven, but ain't nobody wanna die.

Anybody nearby want to help en electronically challenged silver sister install a camera or six? Will pay with beer.

I am only about 1/3 of the way through moving to Florida, but I think Karma is telling me to stay a resident of Virginia and just winter here.

Will pay with beer. Or cash.

Long Gone are the days of Woodstock... and some of the cynical backlash that it also generated.
Remember the bumper sticker that said, "Gas, Grass or A$$, No One Rides For Free."

Remember it well!

Ditto the universal “p!$$ off everyone “ bumper sticker that hit all the hot buttons. Whales, weirds, anti-nuke folks, bible-thumpers, etc. Probably wouldn’t post here for long.

Oh, we had such an attitude in those days when we were young and crazy. Now we’re just no longer young.

“Sanity is overrated” is still my motto ...

:::sigh:::

I suffer from video mission creep with cameras, if one is good then three or four are better, blah blah, so I have yet to get >one<.

A shame the Trooper didn't scan his phone for open aps and/or msg // phone activity.

I hear you but you can't just "scan a phone". That's called a search warrant even though we all know lots of drivers are phone distracted.

Used to be cars were a kind of transportation now they are mobile offices, restaurants, homes, and phone booth / telegraph offices. Lots going on in there besides driving.

Johnston road is pretty narrow. Lot of commercial traffic for such a small road. Maybe nothing you could have done. A mirror is not the end of the world. Probably would have come out just the same if you did have a dash camera. Sorry you had to put up with the bullying. But do not give in to it. Were you pulling the trailer or running solo?

I really like Travelers Rest in the winter. 8 years now. But I do not see me moving there. I guess I am lucky that we do not seem to have much trouble with our house we leave back at home while at TR.

Dash cams....love mine, but, took out the small SD card to capture some of the fall foliage and have yet to put it back in...and no electronic store in sight to get a spare. Get extra SD cards for your cameras.

Trailer is parked at my cabana. Think I might sneak up to Topsail for the Can Opener if there enough cancellations to wedge me in.

Not wishing anyone else bad luck, of course.

Hi, I have had a few dash cameras and the problem that I had was that they overheat and shut off on hot days. Look on line and there are thousands of different models of dash cams. What do taxis and cop cars use? One camera with forward and rearward lenses would cover most of what you would need. Also most of these cameras are so tiny that you need a microscope to read the control buttons.

So Paula, when you find the right one, let us know all about it.

GM is on strike, and it could take a while to get a new mirror. The dealership will install one I get off the internet, but cannot guarrantee it. Oh well. Amazon prime here we go.

As much as a pain in the behind as it was, look at it this, way, the fact that you touched mirrors, the whole thing managed to not hit the Airstream which I would think was within striking distance if it had gotten that far back.

Not that I'd like either, but if given a choice I would take a broken mirror (and associated BS) over panel overlay or replacement any day.

BTW, loved the Amazon price quote for the mirror, really made my day. Nothin like putting some bully on the defensive with a single screenshot. LOL! Guy was so worried about an OEM mirror but let's king kong drive his precious 550 like he just broke out of jail.

Dash Cam - Yep cheap insurance it's like a Capital One Credit Card - won't leave home without one. Sorry that you experienced this trauma. Been there had it happen.

Newbies, especially people who didn't grow up on a farm or some industry where towing was integral to the business... call your local truck driving school. Many offer towing classes for 5th wheels and pull behind rigs.

Now I have read the reviews on Amazon... and shaking mirrors seem to be a common fault. Progresssing on to local junkyards, Napa, etc. IDEAS ANYONE? A little more understanding of why the tow truck guy wanted OEM.
