RF noise from flourescents

I just returned from another trip. When a flourescent light is turned on the RF noise makes it impossible to hear much of anything on the AM band. I don't know why I've put up with this so long (ever since I bought the trailer in 1999) but I'm sick of it! Anybody have a filter they can recommend? Maybe another solution?

Gene

Radio Shack used to sell a filter that connected to the power feed for the radio, it greatly reduced the ignition wire noise from a couple of cars I owned. It may work for you also, last one I bought was $10.

Thumbs up Hi Gene,

R.F. noise from floresent lights is coused by the transformer that fires the light. The best way to cure the problem is replace them with an LED light or incadese lights. LED are now available in a lot of hardware stores or trailer supply houses. LED use less power and are not noisy to to AM radios.
The filter have to be RF filters on your radio. You may try it on the input power line to the radio but if the floresent light is broadcastin RF it may be getting into your AM antena.

Russell,

I have about 18 florescent lights in the trailer. PO custom ordered the trailer and wanted plenty of lights.

Most florescent lights have a balast resistor that will put out a lot of RF with age. You may have one going bad.
