We bought our '95 Sovereign (21ft) last week. It came with the original Sony radio-cassette player.
Can we replace this with any car player?
Are there any specific things we should look out for? (for example, dimensions)
I would prefer to have at least a hookup for my iphone.
I'm a total newbie when it comes to these things. Any advice is great!
Many on the forums have had problems with Sony, but it's the same unit that our friends have in their 2012 FC. I like it as it was the only unit I found that would stream music and phone calls from my IPhone via BlueTooth. Search the net and you can find better prices than at Crutchfield.
I would just go to a car stereo shop and ask. Most radios will swap easily. I recently put in a Pioneer unit W/O ant trouble. Features to choose from:
Bluetooth to stream music from your smartphone or use as speakerphone.
Remote control.
CD/DVD player.
Ability to control a CD changer.
USB connectivity (mine came with two USB extension cables and I keep a flash drive loaded with music attached.
1/8" audio input.
You will probably have to cut wires to splice the wires on the new unit in, but that is easy enough to figure out. I would recommend soldering the connections and covering them with heat shrink tubing (Radio Shack).
Besides these wires, there will be a connector that plugs in. It's better if the new unit has the same connector as the old.
