Question Help me remove this darn antenna!!!

65' Overlander - Wife hates this darn antenna, frankly so do I. Trouble is getting the crank handle off from the inside. All the rusty screws on the exterior are off but this plastic crank seems to keep the whole thing in place. Any ideas? Do I just break it off? Any value in keeping for another streamer? I was just going to recycle it.

It appears that antenna, is an after market item, based on the marks from the original that are on the outside metal.

An antenna like that really has no use, since it's old fashion style doesn't do a good job of reception.

I cut it off, plate the holes, and make the wife happy.

Andy

Good idea Andy, breaking out the hacksaw tomorrow! Where do you guys get your patches? Or, do you just make them out of some aluminum stock?

That is exactly the same mechanism that is on our '65 Caravel. I see that you have removed the four screws from the bottom of the gear box that held it to the bracket that you have removed. If you do not cut the shaft that the crank is connect to, but rather brake the crank handle off you can remove the gear box in tact. I would love to have that gear box if the gears are in good shape, as one of the gears in mine has a broken tooth.

The antenna on ours is the folding type and works very well, including for digital. The gearbox and crank allow it to be turned 360 degrees.

Jim - I'll try it and if I can salvage the box, it's yours. It does turn very well.

As I recall, the plastic crank on mine has a screw in the center holding it to the shaft.

Looks like you can pry the plug off the large end of the handle that will cover a screw in the centre of the shaft.
