Do you have one of these in your bathroom?
There are a few mods from previous owner I have still to figure out. Today I removed the nightlight in the bathroom and low and behold, look what I found behind it! An Atwood switch. What the heck is this? I found the switch online... Atwood Water Heater Electronic Switch RV Camper - $9.84
Other than that I have no idea what I've just uncovered... Anyone?
Thanks...

It appears that the PO installed an electronic ignition water heater.

Which means what? I have an electric water heater as well as gas? How can I test this to see if it works and if you can expand upon your brief description, the info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks...

I have plugged the AS in to shore power (110) and switched on the ... switch...no noise or lights of any kind. Is there an over ride if there is no water in the tank? Where would one install an electric heater if there is one installed... Now the avalanche of questions begin!

My hot water heater runs on both gas and electric. There are separate switches for the gas and electric operation that you can select.

You may want to read the manual. Inspect the unit to see if you in fact do have an dual mode unit. If you do a search on youtube you will find seveal videos showing how to check out the hotwater heater. Normally you will only get a red light if you have a fault with the circuit board. The electric side is call the eco mode, as it saves propane and you money. The dual mode units have 2 thermocouples mounted on the tank to sense the heat, again refer to the manual or the video, not hard at all. Normally most faults are caused by loose or dirity connections. Do not blow yourself up.
Just a quick review of the wiring diagram looks like that switch is used only on single mode heaters, but could be gas or electric, not gas and electric.
Atwood has good customer service they can identify which unit you have.
Good Luck

That's a switch for a dsi water heater. Flip the switch on, and wait a couple of minutes to see if it lights itself.

What they said was electronic ignition, also known as DSI (direct spark ignition) which means you turn on the switch to start the gas water heater instead of going outside to light the pilot light.

Make sure there is water in the tank before you start it up and let it run.

My gas water heater turns on with that switch. The black one. Then a light comes on to tell you it is on. The electronic ignitor comes on and lights the burner. The PO replaced the water heater with one that has electronic ignition but I think it came with one similar to it.

This switch did not turn on 120 v ac to be an electric water heater. This switch turns on the electronic circuit board to fire the propane burner. You need to make sure there is water in heater tank, 12 v dc is on, & propane is available. After turning switch on, You should hear the igniter light the burner. This will try to light 3 times (I think its 3). They will sound like clicks. If the burner does not light, It will stop trying & turn the red light next to the switch on. Hope this helps.

My '97 Safari has two switches and a light. One switch is for the overhead lights, the second switch is to the ignitor on the water heater. When I throw the switch, I wait and if the pilot ignites the burner you can hear it, if it does not ignite the red light comes on and remains on. Some time i have to throw the switch several time to get it to fire.
When you change propane tanks, sometimes there is air in the line that must be purged before it will light. I usually turn on my kitchen burners and light them before trying to fire the water heater. At other times spiders or insects can block the gas line at the water heater so you may have to blow it out with air or take some other action to clean it out.
Not sure if any of this applies to your system, it would be best to look at your manual, or as others suggested, check out you tube for a video. a lot of videos are out there for AS maintenance.
