Anyone using Firefox?

If you are using Fire Fox and the auto fill in for user name and password I have a question.

My computer has lost this capability even though the UN & PW are still stored in the PW Manage file in FF.

If you have ever had this issue and solved it please advise.

I've been using FireFox almost exclusively, and mine has not developed the issue that you are experiencing.

did you delete all your history. If I do that then I have to enter that info again. After that it is ok again.

Go online and download a fresh copy of FoxFire. Programs get corrupted over time - most have self healing subprograms but there are limits over time. Putting a fresh copy on your computer lets you start anew just as rebooting your computer solves most operating problems!

If you are referring to the History in the FF tool bar, yes I have cleared history there and no effect.

I believe there is something to do with the fact that the words "User Name" appear in the user name sign in box on the site when I open the site. I think that box should be blank when I first attempt to sign in. If that is the case and I fill in my UN & PW FF will ask if I want to save them.

FF will ask to save the UN & PW to a new site but will not use that info when the site is revisited.

Would you remove all saved passwords from the save password option in FF before reloading FF.

This may be a computer issue as well - not a Firefox issue. Of course, I'm not THERE but (as an example) on my Macbook Pro, at which I am typing this, when I open Firefox and then go to Airforums I start to type on the address bar and with the first "A..." in "Airforums" - the rest autofills - then I merely hit "enter" and it takes me to the website and at the top right it says "Welcome OilnH2o" - so it is all automatically done. Now, I can't tell you whether that is the MacBook doing that, or Firefox... but I just quit Firefox and then opened it and followed the steps above --

Now... I haven't "cleared history" in probably weeks... (- which is about how far back SWMBO says I can remember anything!)

Don't know if that helps... but the main point is it may be some change in your computer's operating system that is at the root.

The reaction you are getting is what I am getting now.
However FF, if working correctly will not present that page when you attempt to sign into a sit that you have saved the UN & PW. FF should automatically apply the UN & PW without you doing anything and open the site directly. That is what I am trying to recover.

Maybe we're saying the same thing, or leaving out a step - when I have a brand new tab , or open Firefox from my dock, I start to type on the address line... "a" - the address line autofills "airforums.com" - I hit "enter" and the Airforums "portal" page appears, the one with the "latest discussions" all listed. So, I'm typing "a" and hitting "enter" and I'm there - don't know how it could be any quicker.

Now, what you are describing sounds like what happens if I open the bookmarks menu, scroll down and then highlight a bookmarked page, and click on the bookmark - it then does as you describe.

But, I'm not doing that - it's just easier to type the "a" and enter.

This may be too simple, but next time you do sign in, be sure the remember me box is checked.
If that doesn't change anything, try entering a wrong password. Firefox should ask if you want to update your password. Click yes. You will of course not be able to log in. Then repeat the process with the correct info.
Doing this may fix the issue, but at worst it will mot hurt anything.

Clear history when Firefox closes

Make sure that you do not use Remove recent browsing, search and download history to clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences"
Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords

Under Tools / Options / Security you have the 'remember passwords for sites' option checked

I got an answer from a Fire Fox Forum and am posting it here for others that may want to use the auto fill in feature when surfing.

Details like websites remembering you (log you in automatically) are stored in a cookie.
So you now appear to keep the cookies from those websites.
This should have nothing to do with the places.sqlite file.
Create a cookie 'allow' exception to keep such cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions
In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences
Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.
Clearing cookies will remove all specified (selected) cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you would like to keep.
