3/4 ton diesel is perfect for towing a 30’ Airstream.

"Or as I think of it, difficult to get into and you need a step ladder to access anything in the bed look!!" I've seen several people here at the campground with small step ladders to get things from the bed or even to get into the bed.

My doctor says I'm too short for my weight, so when we get a truck and Airstream (maybe fairly soon) my little stepladder will always be handy to get stuff from the bed.

Well, look closer at the Ford's...they have a step option built into the bed along with a folding vertical "grab handle" for getting into/out of the bed. Both step folds in out of sight and handle folds into the bed also..works pretty well. There are also similar options with GM and aftermarket steps which easily attach/fold under the bumper or under the side panels for all models. You can also get a full bed "slide" out which brings everything out for easy loading or unloading if you don't want to climb in the back using one of the step options...Your not too short or "weighty" to use these options...

But, if your not really seriously looking for the advantages of a 3/4T TV, you likely don't really notice those optional niceties available for them...

This is what not to do, unless you like hanging on for dear life. I have the GMC Sierra 1500 SLT and a 27FB and wouldn’t recommend that truck to my ex-wife. My truck has air suspension, BFG K02’s, power programmer, CAI, aftermarket tow and haul brakes, dual exhaust, and it is still disappointing in every aspect of towing. Stay clear of any 6% grade, up or down, taking a risk of overheating or lack of stopping power. And just after 100,000 miles, the engine swallows a lifter due to the infamous 5.3 AFM, repair costs 10k. Having had enough, I just purchased 2018 Ram 2500 Cummins, my life towing is now complete, lol.

All you people with little trucks. I tow with a Freightliner M2/106. Air ride and air hitch. No damage yet to the trailer with over 40 thousand miles on it and a great view when driving. My motto is. If you want a truck buy a truck

Best one I ever saw was a freightliner pulling an Airstream. The guy had a beautiful chromed “flying pig” hood ornament on it. Loved the setup.

OK; I saw your profile picture...dah, I see your TV and AS now....you have an "interesting" set up for sure; not something I would be interested in driving nor hauling an AS with; parking and city driving pretty interesting with that rig, I am sure; what type mileage you getting with that anyway....but maybe I am missing something??

So many factors to consider when purchasing a TV. Personal preference aside, the biggest issue to consider when making this purchase is how often are you going to be towing your AS. If your TV spends more time as a daily driver than towing your AS, a 1/2 is more than adequate for the occasional trip towing your AS.

Even if you are traveling full time and tow your AS full time in the Rockies, you probably bought more truck than you needed for 99% of the time you are driving and towing.

I’m curious how many of you even compared rides between the two sizes. 3/4 ton and larger sized trucks ride like a truck, come with its own zip code and requires parking in 2 spaces 50+ yards from the grocery store door. 1/2 ton trucks ride like a car, park like a car, costs less to buy, maintain, and according to this comparison video, handles the steep grades just fine.

I did the comparison and bought the 3/4 ton despite the fact that I only tow a dozen times a year. It’s the same length and width as my 2000 Silverado half ton. Yes, it does ride like a truck. I went for the smooth ride when I bought that half ton years ago but I tow heavier stuff now and would rather not have to worry about payload.

Gave up trying to park close in years ago. I’m parked far out and in the store while others are still sitting with their “blinker” going trying to claim a space when the next person leaves. An added bonus is, my cars and trucks are free of dents from lazy people who can’t hold their door when getting out because they are so large from never walking more than 50 yards to the door.

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but it's still on the first page of Full Timing so I'm going for it.

My Dodge Ram 2500 (gas) is fine for pulling our 34', but I would want something bigger if I was towing through mountainous areas. The new electric F-150 that can pull a 1.25 million pound train looks promising.

Since most railroad grades are maximum 1.5%, I'd say that's a smart plan.

Just stay off the main lines.

It does have twice the torque of most heavy duty trucks though

Also note that they pulled a million pounds of space shuttle over a bridge with a Tundra...

Same here. We have to cross mountain passes no matter which direction we go and past experience with a F250 7.5L was enough for me.

Yup. Proves you can tow anything with anything for short distances at very low speeds...
