Tire Covers
I have a question for the group......
How many of you have/use tire covers while on the road? If so, can you tell me a little about why you recommend their use? I'm trying to decide if this is a worthwhile item to purchase and pack.
Thanks!

I use. Primarily for UV protection. I use gray double tire covers I picked from Amazon.

I bought a set of white covers for our Foretravel right away. Of course, Foretravel tires are a bit more expensive than Airstream tires, but I'm planning on getting white covers for our Airstream when we get it.
If we arrive late in the day and are leaving early the next day I don't put them on, but otherwise they go on while the turbo is cooling and the leveling sensor is settling down. That way I have the covers on even if one or more corners of the coach are sitting on a tire. That won't be an issue with the Airstream since it doesn't use air bags for leveling.
The reason for tire covers is to protect the tires from UV. RV tires age out before they wear out (usually), and the tire covers can help to lengthen the life of the tires. Many recommend replacing tires every 5-7 years. Tire covers can help you get closer to the 7 years.

I use them for UV protection if the AS is going to be parked outside in one spot for more than a couple of days.
I bought these at Harbor Freight:

As far as tire deterioration tires deteriorate from the inside out. I wonder if UV deterioration is overated. Does anyoine know of a real study? It seems to me with or without covers tires will last 7 years.

tire UV protection
I worked for Kelly Springfield Tire years ago and was taught that the rubber is definitely affected by weather and UV. The UV breaks down the exterior rubber surface and causes cracking and checking and would eventually cause tire failure. They explained to us that the inflation / deflation cycles of tires over there useful lifetime is affected by UV and weathering of the exterior surfaces of the tires and can cause premature tread separation / belt separation and tire failure such as blowouts. Hope this helps. Ed

UV definitely affects tire life, at least in the desert southwest where we see an average of 80% sunny days per year. We use our Airstream year-round, so we do NOT cover our tires.
Our Michelin XPS Ribs have performed flawlessly, but they will be replaced before this summer (at age 6.5 years) due to UV-caused weather checking.

I change my tires every 4 years. I do not use covers or live in the southwest.

I use 303 protectant on my tires, two times per year.
I'm not trying to make the tires shine, though it does somewhat.
The 303 seems to protect them from from UV damage.
This method is definitely easier than taking covers on and off.
This past summer I purchased a new set of tires to replace the ~6 year old tires on my Safari. Those old tires looked almost like new on the sidewalls. No cracks or checking at all. My trailers are both stored outside.

We have a pair of tire covers, sometimes put them on the trailer's south side. Can't tell it'll make much difference for us because we change tires every threeish years regardless - Just seems like they've given us most of their life by then, approx 35-45K miles ea set.
