Okay, this is the 6th attempt over the course of the last week to reply to this.
I would take the 31' narrow body over even another 31' wide body.

Terry,

That's good info to know. Personally, I like the width of the Flying Cloud for where we travel and camp. I don't know if it's too tight to live in as we've not spent more than two weeks in it and most of that was in great weather.

On another note I wish I could get my own body back to the days of narrow body - or as I feel sometimes - does this body make me look fat?

It seemed to fit inside that narrow body Airstream a lot easier a couple of years ago.

Either my computer of my internet connection is acting really goofy, so I am keeping my answers short.
The narrow body is easier to see around, and easier to manuever, especially on narrow roads.

Yesterday I tried to upload a bunch of photos as well as another post to this thread. I say tried, because the connection kept timing out, and i kept getting 404 eerrors, and "page cannot be displayed" messages.
I tried navigating to another part of the forums, and got a message from the campground wifi service telling me my account had been suspended. A call to tech support for them told me that the only thing allowed is to check email, and some "light" 'net surfing. No uploading files, no downloading files, no updates, upgrades, or new programs.

Uhh...So, what, exactly, is this wifi for?... I plan on having a powow with the rv park managers tonight after work, there may be a misunderstanding of what the ISP thinks is "normal".

It sounds like the park has gone the cheap route with their ISP. Not all wireless is created equal -- good caution!

Wifi gear is dirt cheap these days, why don't you offer to "upgrade" his hardware for him? Or is this a bandwidth thing? Bandwidth is pretty inexpensive these days too, even for a business. Maybe the owners just aren't very tech savvy?

Okay, the "problem" is the campground has contracted for a certain amount of bandwidth per day, and they are grandfathered in at a very good rate. If they go to another tier of bandwidth usage, the cost will almost quadruple. I remember a promotion several years ago where a business could do this. If their current internet monthly bill is $300/month, it would go to $1200. Also, they had a prob;em with some people using peer-to-peer file sharing through the wifi system, and hog all the bandwidth. By limiting the amount of data, they are keeping that from happening, and keeping their costs manageable.
I still will be looking into an air card, it is unpleasant having all these photos to share, and not daring to upload them.

Are they by any chance buying this from the phone company? Us cable guys can almost always beat their pricing (by a lot). They can always limit the folks that get into their network, as well.

What city and county is this in? (PM me if you want) Maybe I can give you a few specific people to call (I got low friends in low places everywhere).

You are our heroes! We are emptying the house and in six weeks will own no real estate anywhere -- we are moving into our AS 25 and chasing 75 degrees (we hope).

We tried all this out for nine weeks a few months ago, and bought a phone card end of July for same journey. It worked wonderfully almost all the time. We were in Canada two weeks and didn't want to pay the premium (we had not contracted for Canada in our rate). So we walked to the wifi lounge occasionally while there, and used the wifi at our daughter's house some days.

The phone "card" we bought is a USB and we added a ten foot cable. This allows velcroing the receiver up into the Airstream's skylight (cool, we have omnidirectionality

) This really improved our signal and reliability. Previously, with the USB phone card plugged directly into the laptop it would d/c when we bumped the laptop or shifted around a little. Not anymore. Cable isn't real neat looking but we don't leave it up all the time so we don't care yet.

We purchased unlimited minutes on the Verizon card for $60/month and zero start-up cost. Our cellphone (also Verizon) didn't get unlmtd minutes, we didn't think it was worth it and we don't need it. These all have worked out well so far.

My cane currently resides behind the seat in my truck. There are days when it would be helpful to use it, like today. There is a cold front coming through here tomorrow, so my bent and broken parts are not cooperating. It's going to sit behind the seat until I really need it.

We had some bad weather due to a cold front that rolled through early this morning. there were several tornadoes in the area, several inches of rain, wind, but no hail. The fire station down the road had some slight damage, and the county jail lost one of its buildings. So far, no one has been reported injured.
Bertha (and us) had no problems, in fact a 100mph wind gust didn't even wiggle us. There is, however, tree branches and spanish moss lying all over the place. I am going to risk the wrath of the wi-fi gods, and see if I can post our first pictures of our latest home location.

Did you have to commit to a 2 year contract when you signed up? I don't want to do this, then move somewhere that has really good wifi, I'll feel like I wasted my money.

We use the Verison National Access wireless cards at work for our disaster recovery laptops. They work very well for us. They are $60 a month for unlimited access anywhere in the US. We had to go with a 2 year plan to get the rate.

something smells fishy w/ those $$ numbers. heck, we've got 2 t-1 lines, and we're not payin' no 1200 bucks per month...unlimited data, through a "tier 1" provider. this, for 200 designers (people who make huge files and send 'em back and forth all day). Sounds to me like their provider is bs-ing them...

I'm not sure what the actual cost is, as we just re-negotiated. I'll find out. But even my "home service" broadband access would likely be enough...MORE than enough for your typical campground. For 50 bucks/month, you don't get high bandwidth in both directions, like w/ the t-lines, but its not really needed, for the most part. (unless there are 200 architects/graphic designers who don't know/care how to make efficiently sized files, so what could be 4 or 5mb turns into 200mb+..."and duh, why won't this go through email, chuck?? the stupid mail server keeps kicking it back to me

Bacon said "knowledge is power", and the more ammo I have the next time I talk to them can only help. The owners of the park seem to be great, but they are not "tech savvy". They probably were told what they told me, and they figure that's the way it is. They may really have it set this way to keep people from downloading movies, or watching porn through the wifi connection, and don't want to offend me by telling me this.

well, usually, people who don't want you lookin' at porn, don't have any problem telling you that.

At my company, we don't really care if you're lookin' at porn, for any reason other than its a bandwidth hog, but more importantly, we might get sued for sexual harrassment. (someone walking past someone else's desk, and sees naked people on the screen, could claim "hostile working environment". ) So, we have filters on the proxy server that block it.

What I don't get is the rather "extreme" limit on bandwidth. Sure, stopping file shareing and downloading full-length hollywood feature films makes sense for anyone...and a byte-limit is a way to keep any one person from totally monopolizing the resource...but if the limit is so severe that posting a few jpg's (the size of which is already kept "reasonable" by the server itself) is going to trip it...well, its hardly usefull. There's a huge difference between the "gigabytes" in mp3's and movies and so forth, and the "KILObytes" in some pics posted here.
And trying to consider the typical campground demographic...probably lots of older folks who aren't using computers much, if at all...but among those who do...they need to e-mail pics of the grandkids, right? How are they able to do that? (rhetorical). And typical e-mailed pics are often a lot bigger than what the forums server allows. Our community is self-policing, in that area...email isn't.
anyway...rambling on, here...doesn't make sense to me to have a system like this, and not be able to actually "use" it. Its like having a car with no gas.
