Serious problem with insurance industry

I posted on AS Forum Insurance but thought the full timers would know more about dealing with this problem.

Sold my house last summer. I am now full timing and have a Ford F350 van that has been converted to an RV motorhome (Sportsmobile). I am also towing a 28' 1976 AS that we live in.

We established our "domicile" through a remailer service in South Dakota. The insurance agents are now telling me that the van cannot be insured as a primary vehicle because it is rated or classed as a motorhome. Without a primary vehicle / tow vehicle we cannot insure the AS for full time. Anyone know who will insure this combination for full timimg?

Does the title list the van as a RV? Re register it as a passenger vehicle if you can.

this info seems a little odd, perhaps incomplete?

using progressive i've insured the trailer but not the tv.

they asked about days use per year and i was uncertain of the exact number.

as i recall the categories were 30 days/yr, ??/yr, then 150-200 days/yr and then >200 days/yr.

i don't recall a 'parked full time' category, but travel more >200 was considered 'full use' time.

they never asked about the tv and it is insured with A DIFFERENT company.

besides IF you sold/trade tv AFTER insuring the trailer and were parked for a while in the process...

would the trailer insurance be voided? i don't think so....

and many here tow fully insured trailers with moho type vehicles that are also insured...

HOWEVER establishing phantom residence/domicile may be where the problems arise.

-s/d may want a valid vehicle registration in their state to do domicile.

-the vehicle registration may require proof of insurance...

-and the insurance agent may require proof of residence to qualify for insurance...

-so it can be a circular process where any one step missed, stops the rest...

is this even close to the issue?

so check with progressive OR provide more details because something is missing here...

Thanks for the replys and ideas,

I just got my drivers license in South Dakota last week. We are traveling full time (not parked in one spot for more than 4 weeks at a time). SD Dpt of Motor Vehicles and SD based insurance agents have no problem with me using the remailer's address as my own or full timing.

The van is classified as an RV/motorhome. Every insurance agent I have talked to (8 - 10) has "choked" on the idea of insuring the RV as a TV. They have a need to insure a primary vehicle seperatly from the RV. In this case, the van is both. Dunno how to make them happy. I will attempt to insure them with different companies.

Will let you know how 2air's strategy turns out.

The last time I looked Good Sam insurance will only cover newer units

I just insured the trailer with Foremost as a full timer. No problems.

Will now attempt to insure the E350 van/RV with Progressive or Good Sam.
