Rocinante's full-time adventure

Well, we did it. We're full time for at least the rest of this year.
  • Moved into Rocinante.
  • Hosted an estate sale. Sold most everything we didn't want to keep, had a junk man haul away the rest for donations, recycling and trash.
  • Sold the house in 3 days for more than 15% above asking price. (Having a good realtor who staged our empty home like it was something from the cover of House Beautiful seems to have been a good decision.)
  • We'll have professional movers will come in to pack and store the few things we couldn't part with.
  • We hit the road in April, starting with a Victron-based solar / lithium / hybrid inverter upgrade from AM Solar.
  • We'll be camp host volunteers at Glacier National Park from Memorial Day through at least Labor Day.
  • After hosting, we'll head east to Vermont and then south down the coast to visit family and friends and peep at leaves on our way to Florida.
  • Once we get to FL, we'll camp in the area and start looking for a place to rent or buy.
  • Once we find a stix/brix place there, we will call our movers to send our stored things to us and then furnish the home from estate sales, buying nothing new. Hosting an estate sale teaches you that if you are patient, you can buy amazingly nice stuff at ridiculous prices and thus furnish an entire home at much lower cost than you might expect.
  • We will continue to camp in Rocinante, especially in the summer months when no sane person from Washington state wants to be in Florida.
So, we'll be sharing the more interesting bits of our adventure this year, and we're pleased / happy to join the ranks of full timers for a while.

Big congratulations! We will be venturing up to Flathead Lake mid-September to meet up with our friends before caravaning to our sugar beet harvest gig in eastern Montana. We also have friends camp hosting at Apgar (Jamie and Teri) with whom we will be visiting, so it sure would be cool to meet you. I look forward to your future posts.

Hope you find your move to be a good one. Don't be a stranger to Washington State. There can never be to manny streamers in the area.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. We will be hosting at Fish Creek campground, not far from Apgar. Please do feel free to stop by and look us up when you are in the park.

Westcoastas, we should definitely connect with your camp-hosting friends Jamie and Teri while they are there! We'll be there all summer, so I sure hope we get to meet them.

We will definitely make our way back to WA for camping trips. Despite living here nearly 20 years, there is plenty we haven't seen yet!

Bob and Page/Pagey workcamped at Glacier a couple of summers ago, and said it was a good and interesting but one-time experience for them.

I particularly recall them talking about the distance to a real grocery store...1 1/2 hours, maybe?

Something looooong, making it difficult to keep themselves in fresh fruits and vegetables.

So, be prepared, maybe with some dried things that don’t weigh much.

The gorgeous scenery and the animals will be pretty amazing, all by themselves, and I’m sure it will be a great adventure.

Thanks, Maggie. We will also seek advice from our experienced camp-hosting friends who are at Avalanche this year, same as last. They are even deeper into the park than us (by nearly 30 minutes) and vegetarians to boot, so they may have some good ideas for how we can keep ourselves In veggies!

Congratulations on your new adventure. I will think of you on my way to the office :-)

If you have not read a blog called The Boat Galley, it has a lot of info about food that is shelf-stable for long trips, and also info about keeping herbs and veggies fresh and even growing while underway.

Also, if you can accept deliveries from UPS, you can order pretty much anything.

We plan to be at Glacier 7/6 and 7/7, haven't picked a site yet but probably going to be outside the park due to our 30' length. Was considering KOA but only the most expensive sites available now. Any recommendations on a good park close to the park entrance?

Maybe we can get together when you get to FL.

Thanks,

Al

Last time we were at Glacier, we also stayed at the KOA outside the west entrance. It was expensive, but very nice indeed, and quite convenient. (Those fancy classic open-air cars that go through the park also stop at the West Glacier KOA.) We don't have experience with camping anywhere else in the area, but I will say that given you're looking to stay there during the weekend after July 4th, it's likely to be tight. So, if it were me looking for those dates, I'd get that reservation made somewhere, ASAP. We hope to see you there, or maybe we can connect in FL someday. Good luck!

Very inspiring. We have a plan to do the same thing someday. Still dreaming of the trailer and the day we can move forward with our plan! Enjoy reading others that are going for it!
