Rest Area Guides

Was not sure where to post this so here goes: Is there a rest area guide you use in booklet form or do you look at info about the rest areas along your route via any special web site? I have been just using my map that just shows the rest area location. I would like to get more info about them like if they have a dump station or a special area for trailers and Rv's so I don't have to park next to an 18 wheeler when I need to nap when on a long trip and want to make best use of my time on the road.

I think there's an RV rule that you MUST park next to the big rigs, so all their racket keeps you awake, and even better, so that you can track a lot of dripped oil, grease, and diesel fuel into your coach! Seriously (sort of) almost all rest areas want MoHos and all trailer towers, whether RVs or boats or whatever, to park on the Semi side of town. I always do. There is an advantage, however: that way you usually have a longer, straighter ramp to use to get up to highway speed.

Thanks Colorado Camper that looks like something I can use.

AirsDream, Your right, but I did use a rest area, and I think it was in Kansas. that had seperate areas. It sure was a nice change from the regular routine. I noticed some states not only cater to the truckers but also to campers and families traveling the same routes. Too bad there are not more states like that.

other threads have dug into this topic in various ways...

and yep, many r/a have SEPARATE parking OR areas for rvs away from semis...

there are several states that have this option, just not in ALL of the r/a in any state provide this...

and in the land of oz they often have a 'loop' for rv'ers with picnic tables a dump site and some with drinking water...

think of it as the yellow brick road!

again other states provide these things too...

the book above and others have this info,

but i'm preparing to start a new thread tangentially related so stay tuned..

The "Land of OZ" and "Yellow Brick Road" is some good stuff, I got a chuckle out of that. Any info or threads to make life while traveling a little bit smoother always helps. Will stay tuned to hear more.

I am a first time RV owner who has spent the first 8 months fixing it so I can use it. I have read about Wal-marts, and thought about rest areas. My biggest concern is crime. I know crime can happen anywhere at anytime but it seems to be getting more nutts out there. I have read where robbers will hang out in rest areas to rob travelers. I have read about people being robbed and murdered in rest areas. I guess that can happen at Wal-Mart or anywhere. Just be very careful when you spend the night at a highly used area off the highway. People can get away just at the blink of an eye. 24 hour Walmarts have security guards. Rest areas have police who come and go.

I had a website bookmarked at one time which listed the laws for each state regarding the length of stay in their rest stops. Some only allow a few hours and others allow overnight. I lost that website when my computer crashed but someone on the forum might have it.
