Registration vs Title when moving vehicle to Texas as new domicile

**cross post from > Airstream Community Forums > Dollars & Cents > Title, VIN & Registration ** I'll delete if cross posting is not allowed **

Hello,

I have a Truck and Airstream purchased in NY State with NY State Title and Registration.

I am fulltiming and in the process of switching domicile to Texas.

I have the (Texas) insurance and have done the safety inspections (in Texas) and am now about to go to the County Tax office to get the Registration.

I am unclear on the nuance of Title vs Registration.

On one of the forms I am to fill out (Form 130-U) it asks whether I am applying for "Title & Registration", "Title Only", "Registration Purposes Only" or "Non-Title Registration".

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but I'm basically just interested in Texas plates. For this I need the vehicle to be "Registered" in Texas, correct?

Is there an advantage or disadvantage to leaving the Title as it currently stands (in NY)?

Thanks in advance!
Joe

You’re right—both. Light weight trailers in TX don’t need a title, so that might be the reason for the options.

I don't know TX law, however, if it were me I'd secure both the registration and title in my domicile state as it is my opinion it would be easier to sell the trailer in the future with both in hand.

This website might help
http://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buyin...hicle/trailers

There is a link to the Form 130-U. On the second sheet of that form your questions are answered.

Title-is the title of the vehicle in question. you will need to transfer title to Texas if no lien I do believe.

Registration-the fee for the license plates for the vehicle.

A vehicle title demonstrates ownership. If the vehicle is financed, the lien holder has possession of the title until the note is paid off. The registration is the document showing that the vehicle is licensed and to what person or entity it is registered.

In some states, light trailers are not titled. Airstreams are usually of a weight class that does require a title.

Since you are moving your domicile to Texas, it would make the most sense to both title and register your vehicles in Texas.
