They are not baby mosquitoes (IMO).
I don't know what you call them but I have seen them on and around lakes, they don't bite or sting but you can wander into a large swarm of them thick enough to get in your nose, mouth and eyes.

DRAT! My BGFs and I do Boundary Waters every August. Hafta remember the mosquito netting hats this year! if they are that bad now. I'm all for DEET as necessary, because I'm usually the tastiest one of the bunch.
Handfulls of those bugs is interesting, Air-Quarius. You could almost fry them up in butter for some extra protein.

Super bad year for mosquitos in eastern Ontario. It's been very wet - great for the lawn - good for bug breeding.
We've done many trips into the backcountry over the years (Algonquin park especially). There have been years where one does not just swat the mosquitos on your arms/legs, but kill via a smearing action - like spreading jam. This is one of those years.
We always found that the first day was the worst in the bush - but once we humans smelled less like soap and shampoo the bugs ignored us more.

When back in Louisiana you would have swarms even during early duck hunting season! St. Mary Parish area.
Anywho, when I would go out I could hear them pesky guys buzzin. "Hey hey hey, it's a buffet!"
When I got out the DEET, they howled, "hey guys, it's a KEGGER!"
Always "attracted " them and there are few things I detest in this life, but mosquito always receive my primary attention and I will hunt them down at almost all costs.
I don't like being "angry"....they won't like me when I am angry...they bring that out in me to a scary level.

My wife has type O blood and mosquitoes love her. When we visit Mississippi where I grew up she swears they cast shadows as large as a pterodactyl would ...in fact she thinks they are one and the same.

Hmmmm. I am O Positive. Maybe that explains the inordinate fascination all biting insects have with my exposed skin.
We bought Off Deep Woods yesterday. Hate to use the DEET, but hate those skeeters worse.
We are hearing that it is bad year for mosquitoes. Yeaayy! Also that they are actually the Minnesota state bird.

Growing up in Michigan I was told by an old Scout Leader that you only needed to worry about the skeeters when they stopped swarming, and started pulling from one side, because they could carry you off, wedge you into a tree and drain you at their leisure .

Back in the day when kids could run free without fear of being nabbed or whatever, my dad got me to come home when the streetlights came on by saying that the skeeters would carry me off down to the gravel pit and keep me in their "cupboard" to snack on whenever they wanted. Worked till I was about 6.

Even my non-smoking buddies like one lit in the evening up north. It works every bit as well as the mosquito coils.

Another vote for Plaquemines Parrish, but the high Cascades in Oregon can be just as nasty. It's not that they are eating you alive, but they're so thick you literally inhale them.

Yes, we Minnesotans do say that mosquitos are the state bird (officially it's the Cardinal, but what does the gov't know?). I am NOT starting a smoking habit just to fend them off, though. Campfires work just as well....

That's me! I'm a selfish AB (the 'universal acceptor') and everybody wants me as bug bait to keep skeets off them.
I'm thinking CO2 emissions and body temperature make up for what I lack in pregnancy and odorant markers.
