Large nice aluminum truck trailer for sale

I'm not sure where to post this,
But reading here lets me know that others like me, are thinking of building a base camp,
On a budget.

Shipping containers are one way to get tight structures at low cost.
But they are ugly, often rusty and pretty narrow.

This trailer is along that direction, just a bit larger 48' x 12' and built of aluminum And much better looking! Also an easier structure to install Windows etc into.
It is also about 1/3 the cost of a steel container.

The time is not right for me, but others may be closer to starting their base camp project. So I thought I'd post this up for consideration.

Cheers Richard

No idea of the weight, probably not too much, it's aluminum and built to be towed around.

In My thoughts it's not something to be dragged around.
Rather put in place on a property as part of a long term base camp.
A place to hang at in the not out R Ving season.

Drop the axels and jacks, place on some footings.
Then could be closed up for secure storage while not there.
Even big enough to park a second vehicle in while away.
Stash tools, toys, etc

Once in place with windows installed it could funtion as a nice little shop space.

Funny I ran the idea by my brother and sister, and got flat looks from them both.
Some folks just have no vision.

Am I the only one seeing the potential?
Is this another sign of extreme aluminitus?

Cheers Richard

on Pintrest, there have been some conversions of "horse" trailers to Base camp type TT. Depending on model, some were stationary and others mobile.
It's all on skill level and $$$.

No Richard, your not the only one. The Girl scout camps use the sea containers for dry storage. The security is only as good as the lock used. There is a show on tv, about people using these containers for housing, business, etc. People can get very creative with a ''open mind''. By the way , I get flat looks all the time.

The trailer pictured is not 12' wide.
It can only be 8'-8 1/2' wide.
It is an over-the-road semi trailer designed to haul like 60,000# and likely weighs close to 10,000# empty. The gross combined vehicle weight rating of track/tractor/power unit, trailer, and cargo would be 80,000#.
Are you sure it is aluminum rather than galvanized steel or stainless steel?

I haven't gone to take a look, its a ways away from me. And I'm trying not to get too into it and end up paying storage for years.

That was my thought too about the foot print. So I spoke with the seller and he confirmed the details in his listing. Where is the scratching your head icon?

Pretty sure it's aluminum, built in N Z. Lots of aluminum building down there.

You may be right that as a over the road rig 12'. Seems extreme and it doesn't look that wide in the pics.

Oh well My goal in posting it was to help some one looking for such a thing to find it. And to get it out of my mind, it's calling to me.

Cheers Richard

Interesting idea, not new, just not that common. I know lots of folks use them for storage, but I don't know of many who have converted them to habitable shelters. Anything is possible. My idea of a base camp is something small, portable, efficient, tailored to the activity you like to do (mountain bike, fish, ski, hike or just sit by a stream down an old logging or forest service road). I've got a 28' Serenity International, which I absolutely love, but am thinking it would be fun to have a basecamp size trailer for those "other" type of adventures.

Personally I think a shipping container would look better and be more secure. People are making some pretty classy looking homes out of them. Maybe I don't have enough vision, but I think a transport truck trailer just doesn't have the same potential, even if it's a bit cheaper to start with.
See Five Inspirational Shipping Container Homes for examples.

The standard shipping container is the same width as the dry van linked from Craigslist (96"). The newer dry vans are 102" wide, same as the newer wide body Airstreams.

It probably is all aluminum except maybe the frame rails and could probably be towed by a 1 ton duelly pickup when empty. You would have to figure out how to work the air brakes when towing with a pickup. It looks to be an old reefer trailer with the cooling unit removed. I have always wanted to make an RV out of one of these because they are well insulated and you would never add too much weight for the trailer to handle. There might be legal problems towing it with a pickup so you might have to buy a truck-tractor to tow it with but sometimes you can get an old one for not much money at an auction. I wonder about driving past scales if it was set up as an RV, that could be another hassle, but to use as a stationary box, no problem! I'm surprised that you don't see this done more often, if this was near me I'd be really tempted to buy it. A lot of people look at me like I'm crazy though! I just laugh at them,

I have a buddy with 4 of those side by side. He put them over a bank at the edge of his yard so their entrances are flush with his driveway . He keeps all kinds of crap in them. They fit his outdoor landscaping which is basically junkyard themed...lol

The only aluminum would be the siding, the frame will be all steel. It would not tow behind a pick-up.Anything with airbrakes demands a class a licence and must stop at scales.
Back in the day I removed the axles off an 8x40 trailer to use as an office/parts room to run a private fleet maint. operation-hot in the summer and cold in the winter but otherwise functional

Thanks for the splash of cold reality guys. I needed that.

Let's go back to talking about R V parks, tow vehicles and tire choices.

Cheers Richard
